Warranty
My EX is my fifth Honda so I've no axe to grind but I was watching the cricket this afternoon and caught the KIA cee'd advert. They are offering a seven year warranty with this cheaper, and, alledgedly, inferior car. I am reasonably happy with my Civic but I'm bloody sure Honda couldn't offer a similar 7yr warranty with it. I only do 6k miles a year and will keep my car for 3-4 years but I dread to think what it will be like after seven. Does anyone think their pride and joy would be "as new" then?

It does make you think. Kia are so confident in the quality of this car they are willing to take responsibilty for the reliability of it for 7 years. |

Same with Fiat, they are giving a 5 year warranty now on the 500.
Are you looking in Honda U.K., Have you the b-lls for it.? |

Must help the resale value, if you sold it after 3 years it would still have 4 years warranty, which should help to get a better price especially for a private sale

My Civic is two years old now and judging by the creaks and groans from the suspension is likely to need expensive work doing sometime after the warranty runs out. So yes, a seven year warranty would be ideal for me as that is about how long I keep cars for. On the other hand, I'm not finding it easy to get work done under warranty, the diagnosis of the creaks and groans I mention is the suggestion that I have sensitive hearing.

The 7 year warranty is there to boost sales. Kia know that they're in a badge oriented market, and it's going to take some special effort to get in with the big boys. The thing that disappoints me with the Koreans is the interiors. Very plasticy and cheap looking. Their resale value is also appalling, so as Dave suggests, it might be that this stems the haemorrhage that is depreciation. Honda don't have a 7 or even 5 year warranty because they don't need to. In time they might. The likes of Mercedes Benz went to 3 years warranty to keep pace with the market, so it may be that one of the big boys starts the ball rolling with a 5 or even a 4 year warranty, making the rest follow suit.
The other question though, is one of cost. How much must Honda make out of "just out of warranty" work? I don't think that the 7 year warranty means that Kia truly believe their cars will be perfect for 7 years (although that's what they'd have you believe) More like they're so keen to get your custom that they'll happily repair it for nowt if something goes wrong. There is a subtle difference. Last edited by LNT; 16th May 2008 at 22:03. Reason: Thought of something else! |

Long term strategy!
Kia are simply buying market share while up against the up-market badges.
A friend with an Audi A4 is on his second clutch in two years - Audi now tell him that a clutch is only guaranteed for 3000 miles which is tosh. Kia are sure to make Audi/ BMW & Co re-assess their dismissive attitude to warranty claims. Eddie. Quote:

I had some creaks, groans and squelches, yes squelches, mentioned it at the secomd service and had it fixed " bump stops " were to blame and the trim that holds the parcel shelf in had become loose. I am now noise free. |
