They REALLY like it

Quote "This one in particular is spectacular in no uncertain terms"

This is such a comprehensive review as well. A very good read. Well done Sandozer for finding it

Thanks Civman, thought the part on driving to fuel starvation was interesting, achieving 175 miles AFTER the fuel warning light came on....!

This is not surprising as the reviewer claims to have gotten 138.3 mpg

I wish I could get that

A few conversion errors I think on the pricing.

I have examined the home page of this site and I think the high MPG figures quoted 'may' have been achieved through Hypermiling, a set of techniques and practices that seek to maximize fuel efficiency through careful and calculated driving. As the website states, some of the techniques are very extreme.

I am still rather sceptical though.

There's no way that hypermiling got 138mpg! That would be a world record breaker and Roy Castle would be tap dancing and tooting his trumpet in his smokey grave!

Actually, what the article does achieve is once again expose what a dumb ass the standard American actually is. They can't even grasp basic maths (NOT MATH!)

God bless 'em though. They do massage my ego and enhance that feeling of good old British superiority!

Actually, I do think that a good re-read of this when I'm sober might yeald a benefit or two in the MPG arena....

The whole website I gave the url for is relating to how to achieve maximum mpg, well worth reading.

interesting article, but diesels dont do good in michigan and other northern states winters, we get -20(c) in winter and up in the u.p. -35(c) ....i dont think the diesel civic i have that i use when im in scotland would even start and run in these temps...

must also tell wayne that the diesel civic takes forever to warm up at 2(c) and the consumption figures drop way down in cold weather. the car *** hav to hav heated seats as standard coz of the time it takes to heat up and maybe some kind of auxiliary heating like audi uses. (and a further drop in fuel economy)

must get in touch with wayne as detroit is only 90 miles down the i94 from me. sure with gas at $3.80 a gallon now, do the math and it would be a great summer car except its crappy european spec air conditioner wouldnt cope with 36(c) summers, it *** need to be fitted with the correct american spec air system to cool the car and that *** prob make its fuel consupmtion worse again. and the suspension needs to be fixed. its way too hard for our u.s. tastes and its very noisy.

(the ac system in my u.s. volvo v70r is different to the ones fitted to euro v70s) ie...it works to reduce 36c down to 20ish c!)

american cars are built for our local conditions and euro cars are adapted in many ways to make them suitable .... then they lose all their efficiancies, so it prob wont be such a great car for the u.s. plus its way too small, youd have to buy 2 of them, one for each foot! off to talk sense to wayne!.

yeah your the reason we close the entire u.s. continent down on 4th july to celebrate our independance from certain dumb ass brits. (not all of the users on this forum btw) from i read online in the british press, theres a fair number of brits dont even know what math is!!!.

ego?...ego for what? british superiority?...in what exactly?

I'm pretty sure they only have 6 pints in a gallon over there so that figure is even more impressive!

A US gallon is something like 3.5 or 3.85 litres, I can't quite remember now.

What's hypermilling?

No way will diesel power become common place in the US

They have emissions standards in Tier 3/4 as tuff if not more so as Euro IV BUT

They have shocking fuel standards the diesel fuel in most states is a real rot gut brew that is used for railway locomotives. It has high sulphur (wont do the american spelling ) , low cetane, high aromatics and added filth.

What they call low sulphur diesel in the US would not be let on a forecourt over here.

Increasingly in many areas America is from Mars and Europe is from Venus

for the man in the street, its more about the noise and black exhaust smoke that we dont like here in the us about diesels. diesel is for trucks buses and locos not the family car.
