Civic Rear built like a tank!!

Strange title i know,

but basically i was involved in a 5 car pileup on my drive to work on monday, i slowed down in heavy traffic and the other 4 people behind me didn't and they all went up my backside.

the car behind me hit me straight on, but to look at the back of my car you would hardly know. the plastic grill in the bottom section has partially pooped out, but other than that nothing.

its due to go infor a full check with the insurance company, to see if anything underneathi s damaged, but i've been really impressed. don't know what the front would be like in a crash, but the back is certainly well built as the 206 that hit me did not look good.

As the front of cars currently has to be "soft" to protect pedestrians should you run them over, having a bump of the same force to the front of the car would likely tear it to pieces.

That's likely why you didn't suffer much (visible) damage to, as the front of the other car absorbed it all (unless it's a 20 year old volvo tank or so that hit you)

I think you will find a 20 year old Volvo also crumples a bit, the really bad ones are frame-built American cars.

Did I offend the Swedish people there? (couldn't help noticing your location) If anything it was a Volvo compliment

No offence

I like the old Volvo tanks, had a few myself, but they did have crumple zones 20 years ago, it was a major selling point already 30 years ago for Volvo.

Volvo introduced bumpers like train buffers that allowed impact up to 5mph without any damage.

These days the manufacturers like to keep their franchised bodyshops in constant work it seems.

As they have now decomissioned all the slam door trains, there may be some buffers going spare. Write to SW trains and make them an offer.

Better take them off for the MOT though!!!!

had the same misfortune the other day, a 306 kicked me in the back, I was at full stop at a light, and he was searching his ringing phone in his pocket. duh. the grid popped a bit too, and I had a faint mark on the paint of the hatch. hatch was a bit skewed too but barely noticeable. changed lower part of the hatch (covered by insurance).

my mechanic checked it before the insurance expert went in and had a look inside the boot, there's a big panel covering all the way down into the 'secret boot area' that can easily be removed (clips or something). he checked there to see if there were any cracks. have a look here if it's not already done.

My firat ever car was a Renalt 18 . A guy in a Renalt 5 gt turbo rear ended me at 80mph , when i was stationary. The crash put the boot on the back seat, backseat into the front, me throw the windscreen , as the front seat came out the floor . I was wearing my seat belt. I ended up with cuts & bruises. I was my car had an arse like a tank.

I saw something similar to that once when it was modified into a short fat Granada with the boot in the front.

The driver was OK though.

Did anyone actually worry whether their car was safe for pedestrians when they bought it? (I know I didn't even bother to read about whether it cuddled pedestrians).

But does that same cuddlyness to pedestrians, affect structural safety for the driver and the passenger??? As such should it not be safer for the driver and not for a pedestrian???

I must admit, cars are funny things..... they can take a knock at 30-40mph and have barely a scratch and yet take a minor tap at 5mph and fall to bits, all depends where the knock occurs I suppose.

Actually I never really considered the pedestrian issue at all.

Sorry to hear about your car Slick, let's hope you get it all sorted asap.

Thats the thing, I don't think many drivers really care, tbh round here, half the neds that wander into the road deserve a bit of a bump, also, by telling people their cars are safer for pedestrians does it encourage people to hit pedestrians more frequently???

Fingers crossed there is no major damage and a quick detail will save the car.

LOL,
Tom

I think I can answer that as unfortunately I 'bumped' into someone the other day and the damage to my car far exceeds the damage to the person I bumped. Haven't received the quote yet but I think I'll be lucky if it's less than £700 for mine and about £150 for hers.

Glad you are all ok, it's scary being involved in any accident.

I got hit by a Pug 206 back in April but the damage was the totally opposite of your accident.

I needed a whole new rear bumper, tailgate and parking sensors by being rear ended at between 10 - 20 mph the Pug looked like it hardly had a mark on it.

just waiting on the insurers to book a time for it to go in. i think the car will just need new platic trim and a touch up. me on the other hand could use a good massage, as my shoulders are still tense. i went to A&E today as i still have a stiff neck, have been told that my shoulders have not relaxed yet.

i should be used to it by now, spent many a year as a prop forward in rugby teams.

Crab crunched by ugliest car on the road

Couple of months back a lady driver turning right on roundabout had a change of mind and went straight on..... catching the Crab on the offside rear wheel arch.
She admitted total liabilty , and paid for my car repairs. That came to £187 from ChipsAway who did a super job on the scuffs. Her car required a new wing as the wheel arch lip had jacknifed upwards to a sharp angle.
So, a "1" series BMW came of very much second best to the Crab. Just so good to have see someone keep their word after the accident and pay for the damage without involving my insurance. Thank you Lady Drivers...

First post on here. I had the pleasure of a VW Polo parked in my rear end this morning, hit me at approx. 55mph ! honda dealer repair centre took one look at it and car is in for a 4 weeks. Polo was a write off, Conclusion, Civic Rear End is built like a tank, any "lesser car" I would be sending this post from a hospital bed !
