Brand New Civic - Oil Warning Light=Very Low Oil

We picked up our new Civic on Saturday, since then it has covered 840 miles. On the way home tonight the oil warning light appeared, parked the car on the level and let it all cool down, checked the oil only to find its barely showing a trace on the dipstick.

Will phone the dealer in the morning to report this as well as the clicking noise (subframe issue?)

Any ideas on the best way to approach the dealer?

First thing to do is top up the oil. Some engines do use oil during run in and the top up may not be that much. On the subframe straight to the dealer.

Thumbs up

Many thanks for the heads up, would have been useful to get this info from the dealer - will top up and see how it goes.

Let's hope it's not a start of another "monday car" story

I certainly hope it's not the case of ending up with a lemon

I'm already concerned by the fact that the car has been "running dry", the warning light only came on 5 miles from home and there is only a spot of oil on the dipstick!

Let's hope for the best now, and think everything will be sorted by the dealer and it will be a one off problem.

Should cover over a 1000 miles in her first week that should iron out a few wrinkles before a long and beautiful friendship

The low oil level warning light comes on before it's too late - it's quite clever. The low oil pressure light (red) is the one that tells you damage is being done...

It's quite possible that it's just down to running in - especially if you've been taking it easy. If you have, then give it a little stretch now (have a look at "running in" in the wiki) to get the oil control rings bedded in.

Hope it's the case - we've been running the engine in with some nice long gentle runs. An interesting article on Wiki thanks - I'm a firm believer in running an engine in & deadly opposed to the salesmans theory that modern engines don't actually need it.

Have you checked that your alarm works? Over 20% do not have any sound only flashing indicators.

Yep, all's well with the alarm thanks - we went armed with our amended new car checklist. There was a slight issue with the radio reception but that not unusual with a "neat and tidy" integrated aerial

Is this a 'new' car or just new to you ?

I thought by now all the issues were sorted ie: the radio reception.

I would also not expect a new car to use that much oil in the first 800 miles. Mine has so far used none from new even though I didn't follow the advice and I drove it like a baby for the first 1000 miles.

1.8 i-shift, same as me !

I kept checking mine from day one and I never had any issue with the oil level.

Can you put anything under the car overnight to see if it has a sump plug leak or similar ?

The trouble with new oil is that it doesn't leave the dirty black marks on the floor as a tell tale sign.

Will try that when I get in tonight, haven't sold our old CRV yet so the Civic will stay at home for today.

When running in an engine is it normal to find heavy black deposits (soot?) on the exhaust trims?

No leaks from under the car!

Phoned the dealer today who said they've recently had a similar issue with another customer, will be taking the car in on Friday for them to test/resolve.

It may not have been properly filled up with oil when you bought it. Has the level been going down since you filled it ? Suggest you keep checking it when cold so you know the readings are comparable.

It shouldn't go down much at all . Mine is still at the high point after 10,000 miles.

Will be keeping an eye on the oil level over the next few days to see how it goes, hope it's no too thirsty on the oil as 5 litres of Mobil 1 set me back £48
