Car of the Year 2007

It's that time of the year again when journalists from Europe's top motoring magazines get together to vote for what they reckon to be the continent's best new car.

This year, rather than the normal 7 nominations there are eight (personally, I think Mr Big from Fiat quietly mentioned that unless the Grande Punto was included some of them would end up floating face down along the river Po).

Anyway, the nominees are as follows:

Citroën C4 Picasso
Fiat Grande Punto
Ford S-Max
Honda Civic
Vauxhall Corsa
Peugeot 207
Skoda Roomster
Volvo C30

Given the Eurovision style voting that creeps in each year, I reckon the Citroën probably has the best chance, with the Peugeot 207 (yawn), Ford S-Max and Roomster also having a good shout. You can't discount the Fiat on past form (they've won seven times before), while the Volvo is interesting but unlikely to succeed. And, the Corsa, though worthy, won't cause too much excitement me thinks.

That leaves the Civic as an unknown quantity, although I reckon opinion will be split between those who believe it's the most innovative car by far, while others will cite it's flaws, namely lack of rear vision, no wiper and use of the simple torsion beam set-up (abandoning Honda's usual more complex approach).

The result will be announced 13th November. So fingers crossed!

Your views please!

Well, the Civic has just won the Compact Family Car category in the Auto Express New Car Honours for 2006. Described by the magazine as being a "brilliant compact family offering" they thought the Civic had "an excellent engine range, including the awesome 2.2 i-CTDi". All in all, they concluded "for all-round appeal, it simply can't be beaten".

So we all chose wisely

2006 - Renault Clio
2005 - Toyota Prius
2004 - Fiat Panda
2003 - Renault Megane
2002 - Peugeot 307
2001 - Alfa Romeo 147
2000 - Toyota Yaris

A varied bunch there, but the trend seems to be low emissions and large sale volumes. The Prius perhaps not selling as much, but the whole hybrid-concept won it that year.

I think Honda has a fair chance this year. If only they had their EuroNCAP five-star results already.

My money is on the Ford S-max.

Ford have not won in a while, and it is actually quite nice for one them type of vehicles.

Just to clarify, for a car to be eligible:

"it must be essentially be a new model, not simply changed cosmetically or by the installation of new engine or a transmission. Cars are considered irrespective of their country of origin but must be available in at least five European countries at the time of voting and have an expected sales volume of 5,000 a year"

(from the Car of the Year website)

I read in an engineering magazine that Honda are increasing production from 160,000 per year to 250,000 in 2007 at the Swindon plant which I believe does all of the European ones.

Well, you never know Charles, it might capture the French vote. Remember, style over substance is part and parcel of the French car industry!

Besides if you look at how this year's Eurovision turned out - anything is possible!

Charles, do you think the civic needs a rear wiper then? Only I always thought you were quite happy with it as it was.

tell me about it...we greeks were shocked with the eurovision result
Car of the year award has never been won by a non european car...I know that you will say that 1993 micra and prius won the contest but prius is a hybrid and won for the future technology it has and micra won because it was a car for the european market(it was manufactured in uk...and was advertised by that way in order for nissan europe to sale more cars) The civic will not win not because it is a bad car but because it isn't a car that will sell so much in europe.don't forget that the production is not enough for the european market and that's the reason we all wait so long for our cars to come. I don't believe that they vote the best car but the car they manufacture...(italians...fiat, germans..corsa etc)

yes but in the same plant they will produce type-s, type-r, and cr-v so we will still wait 6 months for our civic

I heard they were going to stop making CR-Vs in the uk and dedicate the entire factory to producing Civics. Apparently they planned to make CR-Vs in the US instead. This was six months ago though, and not from any official source. So I don't know. Who buys their car based on these awards anyway?

when a car wins coty the the manufacturer uses that award as an advertisement of the quality of the car they produce among other manufacturer. that the reason that they have that sticker on the rear glass new "something" car of the year 200x...i dont want this award for our car cause then it will make it sell like golf-astra-focus....boring to see
here in greece the civic is not apopular car cause it is expensive and you must wait for months to have it. That is better for us cause it makes more headturning when it moves...
