I (k)need my Civic
A few comments in case there is someone out there, googling like mad, trying to find answers to the questions I was asking a few months ago.
I have some kind of problem with my knees. They don’t like being kept still for ages in a bent position (e.g. sitting down in a more upright position), or applying too much constant pressure (i.e. to an accelerator pedal). Doctor has suggested shoving fibreoptic cameras in knees/exploratory surgery but decided to look for other options. (I think lots of inline skating when younger might have contributed, but was fun) I got a job I really wanted but that meant going from 7k miles/year to 24k. There was no way I could cope with the pain that kicks in when driving Yaris for more than 30min! I extensively test drove lots of other cars (including 207, Accord, Jazz, Prius, Corolla, Golf, S40, Vauxhall stuff….) but was still getting accelerator pain issues. Cruise control obviously helped a bit, but couldn’t be used all the time. Then came Civic (NHB 2.2 ES). It felt better, so I used it as an excuse to buy one… Seems that the combination of drive-by-wire (lighter resistance pedal), bottom pivoting pedal and absolutely stunning ergonomics has completely, 100%, totally and utterly eliminated the problem! I can drive for hours Another contributing factor is that the pedals are placed deep into the car, so that I don’t end up having to bend knees much in order to reach steering wheel comfortably. Sounds like a small issue, but in my experience it takes a car from a higher class (e.g. Accord/Avensis) to have the space in the engine compartment to achieve this. Combine this with the very generous foot rest spaces next to clutch and accelerator and it’s perfect. Final comment, I didn’t go for the i-shift because, although it eliminates the clutch, the pedal felt ever so slightly harder to press. Perhaps because it has a bit more travel in it? In any case, I wanted diesel because of the 24k/yr. |

Great news Penguin - I had knee surgery just last year and have had it previously as well so I like legroom and plenty of space to move/stretch when driving, the Civic is superb for this, love the cruise-control, gives me chance to have a good aerobic workout on quiet spots
