I think I am the only that must hate the engine,(2.2 diesel) it's load, noisy, it's rattly. It's OK when it's cruising, but around town,it's ****e. It's also been back for that, but they assure me the engine noise is normal!
I had four Seat Leon's on the trot and just bought this for a change, plus the wife fancied it! It's the first time she has had any input on a car, and the last!
If you're not keen on the diesel Civic, why not try the petrol version?

Sorry to hear you don't like the engine - maybe you just have a really bad one, everyone who has heard and driven mine have commented how much quiter, smoother and generally refined it is over the VAG equivilent.
My GF has a Golf 1.9SDI and its a fine enough engine but it is sounds so much like a diesel - its rattly and coarse and my previous Audi 2.0TDI was the same.
The Civic's diesel rattle is there, for sure but its nowhere near as coarse and intrusive.

It is one of the main design features of the car. Image what it would look like with a wiper sticking out - bl**dy awful! To have a rear wiper would mean a full redesign of the rear of the car and I like it just the way it is. Like I said in my post, it is an obvious feature of the car, why complain when you know that's how the car comes. Remember all windows should be clear before driving off, is a couple of extra seconds to do the rear window too much especially now with winter approaching?

Good point ... I chose my Civic (having read this Forum for a while) knowing that many would like to have a rear wiper ... so, a "Civic without" or "something else with" - no contest ! ...

p.s. - I'd still like a rear wiper, but only if it were "concealed" (inside the spoiler body ?) - and yes, I always clear all my windows before I drive off ...

Little things make the civic that bit more endearing and give it that little bit character missing in so many cars. Some habits I have with the car:

1) Unlock the car, pick up my rubber edged scrapper, and clear my windows starting on the passenger side and work my way around and get in the drivers side (Obviously!)

2) Ignition on, into neutral (i-shift), put on seatbelt then pass the start button, this way it has never failed to start or recognise it is in neutral.

3) Plug in ipod and away I go.

I love my car, 'design features' and all.

Two things detract from the ownership experience;

1. Poor paint quality and stone chips
2. Poor feeling from the brakes

I love the look of the rear end, well worth the loss of some visibility, it's still parkable. The lack of rear wiper has never occurred to me.

Never had this problem, could it be specific to your car?

As written elsewhere, some (many ?) of us - including me - don't have paint \ chip issues at all ...

Braking behaviour is a bit more subjective (although I do believe my Civic has deteriorated a little in the course of 1 year) ... it could be degraded (e.g. - water contaminated) brake fluid, or 'glazed' discs \ pads, or 'sticky' caliper pistons ...

Either way, anyone who has changed to "EBC Greenstuff" pads has reported significant improvement over the original equipment ! ...

p.s. - the "best" extra that I have, is the rear parking sensors - not because I can't reverse park - but due to the "small and invisible children that once ran behind me while I was parking" ! ...

What Leon specs did you have? I had an 06 2.0 TDi Sport Ref which was a fantastic car, only traded it as it had reached 50,000miles and was covered in scratches. I don't mind the 2.2 it's no more noisy or intrusive than the VAG engine but i've only had the Civic a fortnight so time will tell.

I've noticed on occasion that my brakes have shown some fade - usually when I have been braking lightly (up to a junction say) and then I need to brake harder - they don't respond as well as going straight in with a hard brake (and its not the auto brake assist (or whatever they call it) either)

This has been discussed often on this fine site, and the deduction I came to was to have a rear wiper and the split screen, it would have to look like either a Prius or a C4 coupe with its toothbrush sized wiper.

Out of the three choices (how the Civic is or the two above) Honda took the right one

Loads to love about the car but clonky suspension, really harsh ride, stereo and interior plastics detract...

1} The "mods" must be sleeping on the job, so I've taken it upon myself to edit out your hideous swear-words (see above) !

2} Perhaps Honda could commission James Dyson to design an "air-blade" to clear the rear screen ?

3} Or, to keep it in house, a brace of tiny Asimos (armed with little rubber scrapers) that clamber out of hidden recesses to the right and left of the rear screen ?

As I said, I had four Leons, the earlier ones were 1.9 TD, the last one was the new shape, 2.0TDI. Loved driving it, the Honda gives me nowhere near the pleasure at all. I suspect it will be going soon! Anyone one want a 6 month old Honda, less than 6.000 miles on the clock? Bit noisy and rattly though! Oh! and no rear windscreen wiper! We holiday abroad quite often, and leave the car with my son and daughter in law for several weeks, and neither of them like the engine either, especially the whine it has.

Why not post an advert in the 'For Sale' section of the forum?

All the other reports that I have read, of the "FoS" Civic engine, praise it for being unusually quiet \ smooth ! ...

Have you compared it to any other 2.2 ? ... maybe - just maybe - you just got a "Swindon Monday-morning special" ? ...
