Colour and Dirt

There are a lot of comments in various messages relating to Night Hawk Black and showing dirt/being hard to keep clean. Over the years I have owned red, yellow, light blue, dark blue, orange, white, green and black cars and have never noticed that any colour shows dirt more than any other.

I have the 'pleasure' of driving down a dual carriageway everyday that is constantly used by refuse wagons travelling to a rubbish tip and even in summer after a light rain the amount of cr@p deposited by them that is thrown up from cars in front is unbelievable and so all of my cars have been subjected to perhaps more than average amount of crud. I can honestly say that every car I have owned looked dirty at the end of a weeks driving and the NHB is no different, it does not show any more or any less.

Of course I expect that others may have a different opinion

Silver has been the best at hiding the dirt on my cars.

Having said that, my last 2 cars have been silver - so a change to Black is in order (Dark side here I come)

Agreed.
I discovered this about 10 years ago, and have had silver cars ever since.
I don't think any colour is going to hide total filth, but en route to it from clean, silver seems to appear clean longer.

My last car was silver and like the white one (Toyota Corolla), looked ok till someone brushed against it, usually Mrs WoolyCiv with some light coloured coat on

Black is considered by the bodywork shops to be the worst to keep perfect, yellow and red are not far behind. I have lived with Milano Red for two years, and would not touch it again. Modern base colour paints are too soft and do not like up to expectations either.
I would agree with silver.

Did you get grief because it looked so clean but was actually dirty?

For me dark colours show the dirt more than light colours. Light colours show stone chips, etc. more than dark colours. Our Civic is champagne silver and is very good at not looking dirty, if that makes sense.

Mmmm not really, got it because it was dirty all over but I know what you mean. This is one of the reasons for my orignal post, I know that any car irrespective of colour traveling on the same roads/same time/same distance will get dirty to the same extent. It is the perception of drt which is different and colour affects the perception. Black goes to grey, white goes to grey etc.

Yeah, I think that pretty much sums it up.
My last car was a 'Thunder Grey' Celica; great colour as it was the same as most of the crud. I could go a couple of months without washing it and it would just look a bit dull. All a wash did was make it a bit shinier.

yer any car ive had looks mucky too soon when you travel down the mucky farmer roads i have to, but after having bright blue, black simes ok so far , but as said about grey cars it doesnt look so good clean. my 307 looked bright and shinny and smart the few miles before it got mucky then looked like a just finshed rally car when mucky ,so far black dont look so mucky as blue but doesnt look so smart clean.

I've seen dirty versions of all the colours apart from the goldish one. Cosmic Grey hides the dirt best.

I had a Laguna in Pearl Grey, and that had great dirt hiding credentials, I woudl have gone for Cosmic grey on this basis, but then decided I wanted the car to shout! It had to be Red............. or Vivid Blue.

Already washed my NHB 2 times and I only own it for a month..... Never done that before with other cars. But the NHB shines so beautiful, so that's why I clean her.....

You've tempted me onto this subject again, WoolyCiv.

Black is THE colour when its clean.

When its dirty, it looks mean. So I'm happy either way.

my A4 was Audi 'Dolphin Grey' which was fairly dark metalic.

In winter it did tend to 'hide' general dirtyness quite well, and to be honest, it was really just a workhorse for me, so I wasn't too worried about cleaning it

The TT was a gorgious metalic blue - not great at hiing dirt, but stunning when clean

And the Civ - looks dirty 5 mins after I've finished cleaning it

But it is SO worth it for those 5 mins!

Having owned two black and two dark blue cars I can say that black does not show the dirt any more or less then dark blue.

So far I've noticed that Champagne Silver colour hides extremely well the dirt and dust... a lot better than compared to for example red colour that I had on my Saab 9-3 which I had before I got my current Civic
