Just lost my door mirror to a herd of Cows !

My first post here, so hello to everyone.

With the pleasantries out of the way....

Can you believe it. My new 1.8 EX (4 weeks old) just had it's drivers door mirror ripped off by a herd of cows. ( Try not to laugh. No please dont laugh ! )

The cows were approaching me whilst driving through a country road, I pulled over to let them pass, and suddenly one panicked and brushed itself alongside the car, slowly ripping the mirror off.

Apparently the farmer tried to warn me. He parked his land rover facing the on coming traffic, but his head lights were on full beam and I could hardly see anything.

He never told me stop, and there were no road signs warning me.

He tried to say I was speeding. I couldn't have been speeding because I pulled over and stopped before the cows went past.

I'm going into Honda tomorrow for them to take a look. But how much do think this will cost for a new mirror ?

It appears the electronics have shorted, because the heating system has stopped working and the alarm flashing lights no longer work. Hopefully this only needs a simple reset. What do you think ?

Matthew.

cant see it being that cheap Thats the trouble with having fancy painted, heated and with indicator included wing mirrors. At a guess i bet your looking at the high 100's. Maybe into the 200's but i could be wrong.

Might be worth asking John Pease Honda for a quote as they offer a discount to civinfo members but not sure if thats only for optional extras though.

Wow, never herd of that happening before, and you're right to have a beef with that farmer. At least it was just the wing mirror and not a window put through - you'd have been fresian cold.

So next time you see a herd of cows, run for the hills, or drive across the nearest field.

It's going to be embarissing explaining this to all my friends. I will be the 'butt' of cow jokes for ever more.

If I'm being totally honest, it was a bit scarey. Seeing 200 cows walking towards you. I could see my life flashing before me. Would the airbags save me, or would I be flattened into the ground.

The farmer will of course be insured, so he should really cough up for this. If he doesn't play you should get the case herd in front of the small claims court.

I would definitely get in touch with the cow owner. Don't accept any bull. There's a lot of money at steak..

Is it alabaster silverside colour? Im sure calf the cars are made in that colour!

Suppose you should be grateful they didn't hit you topside that would have caused some real damage!

Now that is a proof of how good the word defines the animal.. A cow!
No other word could describe that animal better!

Anyhow, you were lucky not to have a worse damage...

I had my one and only accident in 1995, when 2 cows rushed on the road like ponys, from an unseen bank bottom beside the road... The car was a Renault-11, no abs etc. and I hit one of them right in its rump.

Click the image to open in full size.

I think my hitting speed was about 80 kph (50 mph) and luckily, the cow swung away to the left after the hit and not rolled on the bonnet, so we were blessed from any injuries...
The case is different from yours but I wanted to share a memory upon this topic. I apologize if anyone is disturbed....

At least it moo-ved you enough to post!

Haven't had trouble with cows but had a close shave twice with sheep - once in the Lake District and then in Goathland - I kid you not! Baaaadd joke, I know!!! It is really scary though, when you're sat there and lots of animals are running towards your car!!!

Good job there was no damage on the udder side as well. That would have been even more expensive! Sounds like the farmer is trying to milk this one for all its worth. Statistically speaking this kind of incident is rare. Well, there have been a few reported cases, so in fact, I'd say it was medium-rare...

You want to try sitting in an open topped, open sided Land Rover in the middle of no where when an elephant decides its coming your way. Smell it? I was sitting in it!
