I think ive bought the wrong car!!!
Hi guys
Just taken my civic in to have some rattles looked at and they have given me a diesel courtesy car, another Civic. Its an absolute brute. It just feels so much more together i cant really explain it. it seems to handle better, would it be to do with the extra weight over the front wheels or is the ctdi a fairly light engine? Also the in gear acceleration is nuts between 2-3k it really is like a spaceship with warp speed. I love my 1.8 (apart from the squeaks) but that diesel just seems that bit better, is there any downsides to them??? Cheers Adrian |

The diesel makes a lot more power in the mid revs range, hence the increase in "usable" performance. The car is in fact slightly heavier than the petrol.
The downside is that it costs more to buy! |

Have you tried driving your 1.8 properly?
When you get it back, have a go at doing a slip road from first, thru second, and change when the lights tell you to |

most people still think diesels are slow etc, but they need to get in the real world, i just used a 1.3 fiesta until my new diesel civic came , and i couldnt beleive how much petrol it used, the civic is much more better 44mpg and i dont hang around on the open roads
i tested the diesel as i will always be diesel, until the next fuel cell comes out from honda, then will give that a try. |

Dont get me wrong i know my 1.8 is quick infact its bloody quick, my brother has a 2.0 C4 (we cant all be perfect) and he is gobsmacked by how much quicker the civic seems, i think as Pottsy says its useable power in the sense that you dont have to rev the nuts off it.
i already miss my auto lights and wipers in this weather, oh yeah and my cruise control. |

Everyone has their own preference, the diesel suits how i drive, The price would be the main downside, diesels always command a premium over the petrol.

I remember watching a program on one of the geared shows (top, 5th?) a track race between a diesel Skoda Fabia and New Mini Cooper. The Fabia beat the Mini, though with a small difference, but it did beat...
Still, I am a petrol guy but respect the new diesels... |

Ive just been out and looked under the bonnet, its a bit full up under there aint it!!!
I did notice one thing though, and this may sound really stupid but i couldnt see where you put the coolant. iI assume you do actually put coolant in the diesels. On the 1.8 its at the front on the passenger side, but it sure as hell aint there on the diesel. |

I have the 1.8 and had the diesel as a courtesy car, and it only made me feel even better about my purchase,
It made my an Mrs Bungle ill when we were in it, starting it in the morning with the back end near our front door filled the house with noxious smoke, and the tjhng soundel like a cheifton tank idling. Yes, it pulled better from lower revs, but I'll choose a sweet petrol engine and stir it's 'box properly any day. 42mpg aint to shabby, either. |

Don't get me wrong. If the diesel was available in Finland I would buy one.
170 bhp and all that torque. But no, I'm not allowed to do that because someone at Honda Finland decided against it. So take my signature more as the envious ramblings of a petrol head. |

Same here, sure, I woulda loved a diesel. We've also got this wonderful thing called the diesel tax over here. You must pay €500 extra / year for owning a diesel car. The tax dates back to ... oh I don't know what.

I agree, the diesel may get loud when you get past 3500rpm, but it's very quiet below which is perfect for the way I drive. Steady acceleration, nice punch in the spine and then change up a gear. The 1.8 is very quiet below 4500K but needs the needle bouncing off the rev limiter to feel any kind of punch or pull, and it sounds like you've got an engine screaming either side of your head when you're doing it. As for filling the house with noxious gases! What kind of numpty parks their car with the exhaust near their front door and leaves it open whilst the engines running? I hope you haven't got kids! That could cause profound mental retardation! or maybe it's already started |

And, as the gauntlet has been thrown down...Do you wonder why the diesel costs more than the petrol? It's because it's better... there, I said it... the diesel is a better car. The owners know it, and the reviewers know it. The only people who don't know it are those who still think of diesel engines as the things that powered Ford Transits in the last century (come on peeps, this is 2006; get with it!). I didn't realise that the petrol engined variants emitted air freshener when parked up against front doors either! Now, after that riposte, let me remind you that we are here because we're fans of the Civic as a car, irrespective of the spec, engine size or colour (thogh of course NHB is best |
