No cost option choice

IF Honda had done the sensible thing and made EITHER the gunk or the space saver spare wheel a no cost option for the customer to choose, which one would you have gone for?

Space saver here too. In fact I'm going to bug my lease company to cough up for one... citing the gunk replacement cost should do it!

That makes 4 - 0 with my vote. Do you really think anyone will opt for the gunk

If they do, ask them to remove the repair kit and put it back in its cubby hole ... that should change their mind

It is a hard choice. I like the extra space. It is not that uncommon for new cars ot to have spares.

It would be nice to have had the choice. If you've a young family -- you need the space. In my case, they've flown the nest, so I would prefer a spare.

Fair comment, I guess you could pay out for the spare and leave it at home when you need that extra space as you have the gunk as a back-up.

Sometimes though, you may get a puncture where it's unsuitable to jack up the car and change the wheel so you use the gunk regardless of whether the tyre needs replacing. It's a catch 22 situation, who says the puncture will be repairable anyway?

I know I shouldn't say this, but; in 47 years of driving I've only had 2 punctures anyway.

Personally, I don't like repairs - especially on the more low profile tyres.

you use the spanner. It slots in and doubles as the crank handle. Works well enough. You have to be carfeful, though. The spanner can slip out occasionally...

I posted the other day re a 3 car roadtest in Auto Exp.
The German owned Mini had run flats, the American owned Ford Fiesta ST had a space saver and the JAPANESE Suzuki Swift had gunk.

Do the manufacturers really know which route to take?

The electric pumps quite handy though!

Not sure it quite compensates for a lost morning waiting for the AA to take me to kwikfit only to find no key for locking wheel nut! Still nothing a hammer and cold chisel can't fix.

Definately a spare.

As I have said in other posts, I phoned Honda CS before I got the car and had a moan about not having a spare and the very nice people at Honda sent me one free of charge.

I have had 3 punctures in 23 years of driving (the first one on the day I passed my driving test)! All of my tyres were repaired, with no problems afterwards. If the tyre could be repaired after gunk, I would opt for gunk as I like the extra space in boot. But as it would seem the tyre can not be repaired post gunk I suppose a spare is in order.
