But if the reading in the car says 0miles/empty tank then you'll only get 45 gallons in, a whole 5 gallons is for reserve.

That bit does worry me, and I haven't had the nerve to drive the extra 5 litres worth. It means I only get around 480-500 out of a tank (- 5 litres) but on the flip side I don't get to walk to the nearest garage in the pouring rain either

I'm sure you meant litres, not gallons (unless you have a trailer sized fuel tank).

My 50 gallon Civic conversion is coming in to the how to section soon; all you need is some tubing, 500 washing up liquid bottles and some sticky back plastic!

Yes, sorry...I meant litres. I've not used all of the extra 5 litres yet; but I've managed to get 45.5 litres in to the tank before now!

Maximum I got in was 48.5L
I drove 40Km after the computer hit zero to go.

I just want to check out how far I can go after the zero point.

As a slight aside here, what are the consequences of running out of diesel? I always had the impression it can be quite serious.

The entire fuel systems needs bleeding. Not too big of a job, but you need to know what you are doing. Generally it is best to call a mechanic out to do it!

Actually, it's described in the owners manual. The procedure is quite easy, because this car is fitted with bleed pump so you don't have to dismantle loads of stuff like on some cars.
But better keep it on the safe side and fill it up (if your release mechanism is working )

I didn't know the Civic had that. That's useful!

I had to bleed a Transit engine last year. I loosened all the nuts on the inlet pipes, and crank the engine over til the fuel started spitting out. Tightened the nuts up, and after a few seconds (and a bit of smoke) it started fine. I wouldn't try it on a descent engine though!

Most I have put in was 47 litres. I was getting worried by the 0 miles to go bit.
