Small Family cars
1. Skoda Octavia.......81.1%
2. Honda Civic...........81.0%

Isn't it odd that different 'owner surveys' can produce different order of results.

The percentages are about the same for the Civic but lower for the Octy.

Apart from the i-shift and suspension I think the rest of the Civic is OK. Honda have sorted the i-shift (full Auto) but it's mainly the suspension stopping me changing.

A good result. The Jazz won its class as well.

Lexus wins JD Power award (again) - Car and Car-Buying News - What Car?

The survey does rate "appeal" highly relative to "quality and reliability" which will have helped the Civic result I suspect:
About the survey
The redesigned 2009 UK Vehicle Ownership Satisfaction Study (VOSS) is the successor study to the UK Customer Satisfaction Index (CSI) and is based on the evaluations of more than 15,700 online interviews from UK car owners after an average of two years of ownership. The study includes 29 brands and 101 models.

Owners provide detailed evaluations of their vehicles and dealers, which cover 67 attributes grouped in four measurements of satisfaction.

In order of importance, they are:
Vehicle appeal (37%), which includes performance, design, comfort and features

Vehicle quality and reliability (24%)

Ownership costs (22%), which includes fuel consumption, insurance and costs of service/repair

Dealer service satisfaction (17%)

What's the problem with i-shift?

driving an i-shift is an art in itself. make an effort to get used to it and its not that bad. if you want to thrash the pants off it use the paddles. otherwise drive it steady round town and the gear changes arnt bad at all. it will never be as smooth as a full auto no matter how well you drive it, but it can come very close if used propperly

I think the mechanical problems refer to the problem of the i-shift , handbrake , and maybe the diesel engines . I suppose the above , because in the survey they dont include a different domain (of problems) for the gearbox or the handbrake , so they probably refer to these problems as mechanical. The german magazine autobild conducted a long term test (100k km) in a civic 1.8 and it proved that the car was very reliable in all sectors (including mechanical) .

i also think that Skoda owners still have a very low expectation of the car, so end up scoring it very highly. Don't get me wrong though, they are built excellently.
