I actually think the front fogs on the Civic are great. I live in an area with many unlit roads and they are a godsend in this weather to improve the view of the sides of the road. Pity they break so easily

I agree with the comments that the correct use of fog lights is often ignored; having them on when there is no fog, and worse still in the rain, and thren not putting them on when they should. They front ones are always on on the Saxo's with big exhausts

Obviously it doesn't make me more visible, I'm talking about those marginal conditions where visibilty is slighty reduced such a rainy, overcast day at dusk when driving a road coloured car makes me feel a litle vunerable.

In fog or seriously reduced visibility I put the lot on. Am, however, always a little concerned in spray about using rear fogs because of the risk of dazzling following drivers. In that situation I tend to switch off the rear lights if I'm being followed.

In those conditions you put your dipped beam's on. they are just as visible as the fogs but without the over glare. "Putting the lot on" is totally at odds with not only the law but respect for other road users. Your front fogs do NOTHING for visability unless it is seriously impaired (I'm talking 20mph impaired) and only provide a nice dazzle effect for oncoming road users.

Thankfully in my area the police have finally started pulling people who treat their lights as you do. £30 FP notice I beleive for driving with undue care.

Please read the highway code (importantly the section on usage of lights) and have a rethink.

So you think that it's better to have the wrong lights on because you can't be bothered filling up your washer bottle maybe once more a year?

Incredible.

There is a problem.

The fog lights like nice on the front. Yes thery look nice on, but it it totally unacceptable to use them in anything but terrible thick fog or possibly heavy falling snow.
As mentioned before, they are designed only ton illuminate the edges of the road so you don't drive off the edge while travelling slowly.
I think they are not really necessary as conditions never really allow their proper use, and when it is that bad, dipped headlights usually suffice.

To put front ones on in rain is ludicrous! All it will do is reduce your forward vision and blind on coming drivers. Not safe, not clever and not legal.

With rear lights, I am fed up with people using their rear ones. What good are they doing when in a busy town stuck at traffic lights or in start stop traffic? All it does is mask their brake lights and dazzle following drivers. Have people no sense at all, or is it they just don't care and have no consideration?

I equally despise people who sit at lights or in traffic, especially in the dark, with their brake lights on. You have a hand brake. Use it. The foot brake is only to slow or stop you, not to sit at lights or in traffic with.

It's an aside but I agree with you Bungle. The only exception is if you are stopped in a tricky position and by holding the brakes on makes you more visible to big lorries. Might save your life.

On the subject of fog lights. I reckon you will know when you need them on, i.e. if you are having trouble seeing the edge of the road in thick fog, turn your front fogs on!

i'd rather see people using fog light in poor visibility than the huge group of idiots that drive round with no lights on at all. Did a 15 mile journey today in some quite bad fog and at least 10% of the cars i saw had no lights on at all. most of them were big expensive cars, BMWs, 4x4s etc.. and never having bought something that expensive i've always wondered if they were optional extras along with indicators

Yup, Bungle. Agree with all of that. On the road, courtesy is only another word for safety.

But courtesy car isnt the same as safety car

Actually here in Denmark it allowed to use the front fog lights and sidelights as daytime running lights. Haven't used it yet.

Even though the dipped headlights turn on by automatic it's nice to have the auto light feature. When it's dark outside the dashboard lights dimm.

Same here on the washer bottle front.

In fact I've made a startling discovery. Petrol station washer fluid (the stuff out of the pump that you get 5ltrs for a pound) is better than halfords bought concentrate (tried 3 brands, all rubbish by comparison). It's doesnt over foam and never freezes the nozzles. And at around £3 a month (3 visits) it's worth the outlay and losing the hassle of finding a container to mix some fresh stuff up in at home.
The total garage near me is the best as it gives way more than 5tlrs (Almost 10ltrs in fact, found this out by buying some to fill the car then putting the rest into a container kept in the boot as the tap wouldn't stop giving).

Much rather spend that £3 than spend £30 for FPN giving to me by a copper for driving around looking like a ****... sorry, I mean using my foglights in conditions that don't warrent them
