According to the table, the Pence Per Mile is the same for Diesel and the 1.8. So they're the same, unless you want a 1.4.

i went for a 1.8 in the end because altho there is just over 1k price difference when new after 3 years the 1.8 is a good 2k cheaper i would say hence i went for the cheaper one

if you want more power then the diesel is the best option, if you have no interest in that then its personal preference. I want (and will have) a 210+bhp civic that can return 50mpg a fmic, decat and single side exit custom exhaust with a good remap should see this thats why i chose diesel

I went for the 1.8 as I don't do enough miles to warrant getting a diesel.

I didn't specifically go out looking for a diesel but I tend to go for something daft, then something sensible every 2 years or so, the last 5 years I've done :

RX8 to Audi 1.9 Diesel to Audi 3.0 Sport to Honda Civic 2.2 Diesel.

My next car will likely be a Mercedes SLK or Range Rover Sport but it depends on what the government do as an incentive no to buy one. It could be the end of the road for me and flash cars if road tax etc goes up much more. But I'll happily stick to diesels as I like torque. In fact I'd go one step further and say if I HAD to change cars right now....I'd buy a brand new Civic Diesel I've been so impressed over the last 2 months with mine. (Even though I have clutch slip)

if your 18 and you want a type r so would go for a 1.4 and make it into a type r replica but they couldnt with a Diesel obv because of the sound.thats one reason why people would go for the 1.8 aswell some people think if you have a Diesel then your more interested in mpg then cars and all Diesel are slow.i happen to think thats wrong as i loved my old 306hdi chiped to 130bhp was better then any of my friends 1.4 306 i tihink like you said if your not going to chip it and dont do over 13k a year its down to the price of the car which ever is cheaper

I wanted the diesel at first, however the price of the car was far too much for me. The petrol 1.8 version is 4000 Euros cheaper and is still quick nippy and economical and I dont drive enough to warrant it. Added to that is that when a turbo charged diesel goes wrong it can be expensive indeed as they are more complicated than their petrol buddies. A friend just shelled out 7000 Euro for a new turbo and engine. It was an opel though.....perhaps it doesent apply to Honda

I searched hi and low to find a well looked after diesel in my price range, didn’t take long but I would have waited. Coming from a CTR the 1.8 simply wasn’t up to satisfying my need for speed, I found the diesel a revelation and the step down (perhaps up?) from the CTR not all that big – in fact given my circumstances and the roads I drive on the diesel is probably quicker then the CTR 90% of the time.

Buying used meant the gap between diesel and petrol wasn’t all that much, perhaps in the region of £500 to £750. Will easily recoup that over the time I plan to keep this for.

Personally the petrol makes little sense but I can understand those that would prefer the nature of the 1.8 – horses for courses…

Makes plenty of sense, when you live in a country where :-
  • Diesel fuel costs the same or more than Petrol
  • Servicing a Diesel is significantly more expensive
  • A new 2.2 is £4,000+ more expensive than a 1.8
  • Your insurance is a good deal higher for the Diesel
  • The 2.2 was never offered in 'Executive' (EX) trim
  • Honda have even stopped selling the 2.2 'Sport' !
p.s. - and I do less than 40K miles per 3 years - and the general speed limit is 90 KPH (56 MPH)

As another poster said, horses for courses, but;

The petrol 1.8 is quick enough for most purposes provided you keep it at the top end of the tacho. I often drive it and the GTR on successive days-485 hp to 140 hp- and it can be just as much fun on the right road- just different.

Diesels are excellent, but I get personally a bit fed up with the very narrow power band.

Obviously the diesel is more economical, but the fuel is often more expensive, especially in winter.

The engine noise of the petrol at high revs is much nicer ( one for the anoraks, I know)

It's much cheaper to buy the petrol.

At the end of the day, they're both good, so whatever floats your boat..

I think this will be one of those cases where each person defends the car they own.

I bought the 1.8 because I like the power delivery of petrol cars.

Test drove the 1.8 and the 2.2 turbo diesel last week before settling for the latter.
Diesel had much more get up and go and was very impressed. Very very impessed.
1.8 seemed sluggish and didn't feel like a 1.8.
Each to there own though. Personal preference rules

it all comes down to what kind of driving you do and how you drive! i like a smooth ride and altho the 2.2 is the smoothest diesel i have driven (my dads got one) its still a turbo also i like the whole jap thing of red lining when im in a racing mood when driving a turbo its different! my main reason i got the 1.8 was its cheaper and i do short trips! a lot fo people will stay away from the 2.2 because of the whole diesel sound crap bla bla bla which yes is true but there not slow anymore! i think arround a track they would be pritty much the same even if the 2.2 was tuned to 180bhp.i feel the 1.8 handles a lot better on corners. also the sound of a 1.8 which a inductuion kit bring tears to my eyes love it! not the same as a v6 but still

It's definitely a personal thing, I drove the 1.8 and then the 2.2 D before purchase. The morning of that day I was sure I would buy the 2.2D but when I put the 1.8 right through the revs I was amazed, it was just what I'd been looking for in an engine for many years (never owned a Honda before). I was so very happy and blown away by what the 1.8 could do, it ticked every box for MY needs.
