This is a classic accident, just look at the number of bits of broken plastic at roundabout entrances.
Here's how you avoid doing it yourself. When waiting in the queue and you are next, DON'T look to the right until the car in front has gone and left, then check and go. Sounds like it will slow everything down, but it does not as it only takes a few microseconds and the car behind you won't even notice any delay. In any case, smacking the back of the car in front will cause more delay, and of course you are at fault as YOU ran into the other car. Give it a try and keep your Civic looking great.

oops a case of "careless driving" possibly "danegrous driving" but not by your wife, the other one should never have been driving with a dog in her lap, thats insane...talk bout asking for an accident to happen...I hope your wife pleads non liable all the way.
Id report that to the cop shop straight away and get it known by your insurance company that you have reported it because of the dog, thats like carrying a shild with out a baby seat these days!

Hitting someone from behind invariably means it will be your( in this case your wifes ) fault because technically you should be leaving enough room to stop, and she should have made sure the vehicle in front has moved away before proceeding...reporting it will cover her back, potentially, which could in turn see her prosecuted for dangerous or careless which will keep your insurance and NCB intact...

Bad Luck!
Hope it sorts itself, it doesnt help the damage to the poor Civ of course

I agree aswell... and to add... remember the days of your driving test?

No, thats cos you forget stuff lol but examiners look for at least two checks in each direction before proceeding, apply it as a further rule and it should keep you safe(r)...

lets hope the police get involved, the other driver left the scene of a accident refusing to give her details.there has been a lot of cases where this has happened and it is a scam, they have been hitting the buses around here, slight damage but then the bus company gets a huge bill for a complete back end rebuild, the drivers all have cameras now to take photos of any damage.we have photos of the other car and its not more than a scratch.

not happy

up date on my car.it came back from the garage yesterday.straight away i could see they hadnt completed all the work.i was told they would replace the grille, bumper, valance, head light and sort any of the scratches out.they had done the grille and headlight but had tried to polish out the scratches but had left the paint flat, they hadnt replaced the bumper or valance and now there was a new large scratch on the passanger door with a oily circle drawn around it.we went off our heads and after about an hour of phone calls to axa and the garage, the car was returned and i am still stuck with the chevy aveo.

what are u talking about?! The impact barely broke the bumper, how could it possibly bend the chasis?

The bumper is flimsy plastic.
It fixes to metal clips and forms over the chasis.
Judging by the way the light and bumper are...that dont look good IMO.
OK

What do you think is going to take the impact of 1.5 tonne at 10 mph ?

A short story....
Driving through upminster in a mondeo estate.
Kids pushing each other about toward the road at the pavement edge.
Got my attention incase one fell in front of me.
A car further on had stopped to turn right and 3 or 4 had slammed the brakes on behind.
I look back for a face full of mercedes.
Slammed the brakes on and got down to about 10mph from 30 as I hit.

His vehicle appeared undamaged except for where there should be a 5mm gap at rear panels was about 1mm.
The front of my bonnet was buckled under slightly along with the number plate and top of bumper.
No Broken glass.....no cracked plastic.

Thats it I thought...merely a scratch really.
Inusrance assessors decided to write off my car beyond economic repair.
The merc needed a new back end due to extensive chassis damage.

Surprising what damage is done at 10mph.

oh yes....no airbags

Yeeeppp ...

I was hit on a mini-roundabout (at slow speed), when the Civic was 6 months old (other driver didn'nt observe the right of way) - I braked hard, but got hit on one front corner none the less - cracked plastic front bumper, no broken lights, car perfectly driveable - support structure \ support points behind were knackered, and it needed a new bonnet ! ...

About £2500 to repair it - which came off of the other guy's insurance ! - didn't affect my premium or no claims record ...

Its not going to be the chassis but a sub frame if anything.

The chassis is at the base of the car not the top where the grill attaches.

I also stand to be corrected here but the chassis generally stops at the passenger bulk head with struts forward of that, that accept the wings and engine inside the sub frame as in this kit car picture (doesn't show sub frames):

Click the image to open in full size.

You're not usually going to bend a chassis at 10mph. I doubt you'd bend a main strut just maybe a sub frame if anything. That said, any decent garage will probably check alignment measurements just to be sure even if there isn't any obvious problem.

i think the garage will know more once the bumper is removed these bumpers flex a lot on impact and in some cases its hard to tell if theres damage to the structure underneath lets hope in your case there isn't.

That picture is from automotive history (exception of some 4x4's and commercial vehicles) it's a ladder chassis a huge lump of metal that the bodyshell sits on. The floor and body of the Civic as per most cars is a structural component.
