Its getting worse!!

I bought a Civic three and a half weeks ago, all was fine for the first week, then the back ache started, in lower area of my back just above waist level.

A week ago I was in agony with it, it got worse every time I drove the car.

I havn't usd the car at all this week (although I have a 120 mile round trip to do tommorow) and I'm feeling a lot better.

Anyone esle had this problem with the seats in The Civic and if so was there a solution?

Regards all

I would suggest that it is a coincidence as the seats seem generally O.K. to me. If you have a minor disc problem in your lower back, it can be made worse by sitting for any period. Keep moving and play around with the seat position to get a better compromise. Regular movement breaks are vital on a long drive.

I'm the same ..... not quite in agony, but I can feel my bad back sneaking back!!

It doesn't help that the seats need adjusting all the time - it's hard to get comfortable ... but, sometimes I do (only to undo it when I get access to the rear!).

They look comfortable, but aren't .... my last car was 10 years old and I had it all that time (the seat had moulded to my ample rear end).

When I had my ES I did find the seats a little uncomfortable for my lower back. The way around it I found, firstly I placed some flat steel washers under the seat rails rear mounting points. This tilted the seat base very slightly more forward which had the effect of spreading body weight a little more to the legs and less to the back. Some cars have adjustment for the seat base.

I also bought some sheepskin seat covers which made sitting in the seats feel like a luxury armchair-expensive but worth every penny to me at the time.

The type S seats I find extremely comfortable-totally different to the ES-but everyone's shape and size are different,so those seats may well be perfect for someone else.

I find the seats good but if its indeed not properly adjusted i do notice this almost instantanuously. In the beginning i had my upper arms suffering badly on long journeys. After some puzzling i've now found a good position (higher seat + lower steering wheel position).
Dont give up on the civic yet, try lots of different settings.
And on long runs try to let your foot rest (if you have the cruise control) instead of keeping it hovering above the throttle/brake.

I found out that having my wallet in the back pocket of the trousers was the cause. Since then I really enjoy long rides without any pain.

I find the seats very comfortable but it took me a while to get the seat into the right position when I got the car.

Hi all, thanks for the replies

After yesterdays drive......................my back hurts!!

I suffered back problems years ago and thought I'd got rid of them.

I've just had 6 years of Volvo S60's and Saab 9-3's without a problem.

The Mrs got her sewing machine out today and made a "swiss roll" for me, about 18 inches wide and 5 inches in diameter, she made it from the wadding material you have in jackets and covered it with some fabric she had.

Fingers crossed it will work, I will let you know!!

Regards

Thumbs up The "swiss roll" worked.

Just done a 240 mile round trip, not a problem!!

The Mrs handywork was a bit cheaper than having to go out and buy a new car.

Regards

Hey,

I have a prolapsed disc, been suffering for a couple of years now....However the support I receive from the seats in my CTR have helped alot on my hour drive to work.

Compared to my Astra, its like sitting on a cloud.

Try and keep the seat back straight and your knees slightly bent, when you are not changing gear, bring your clutch leg up all the time at an angle.

I don't have a bad back, but I do find the seat nothing like as good as the Rover 216 SLi I used to have. There was a lumbar support adjuster, and screw back adjuster on there, but I've only got the SE Civic with no lumbar adjustment - so maybe my own fault??
(Come to think of it I don't know if the posher models have a lumbar support adjuster.)

My Mrs makes sure there's never enough money in my wallet for it to be any problem!

yes I put a small cushion in the same space and pain gone. Guess my ass is not big enough for the seat to be ergonomic for me :O
