Angry DVLA Rant

Just contacted my dealer to see if the car was gonna be ready to collect on Tuesday. The car's in and the paperwork has been sent to the DVLA to transfer my private plate over. Two-three weeks.

So they have had the paperwork a week so the car will be ready in a fortnight. Maybe. But definately not by Turesday.

Am I wrong but I thought that a vehicle transfer could be done over the counter at a DVLA branch?

Now I have to go back to my insurance company and get them to change the start date of the civic policy as my MG will no longer be insured from the 1st, but that will negate the covering certificate that the DVLA have.

I'm so narked off at the garage for not bothering to tell me this, and for the DVLA to take so long to transfer a plate.

Also as I don't have a firm date for when the transfer will take place I can't specify an exact date for the policy to start.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGG GGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Phantom both my parents have had to wait longer than hoped for their new cars recently so I can see this happening to me...

I posted a thread about this a few weeks ago
Switching personalised plate

I spoke to my dealer last week and he said there wont be a problem, car should be in on Monday and he's gonna ring so I will bring this to his attention again. I am not waiting any longer than I have had to for the car!

Not been offered it sadly and the dealer hasn't even mentioned it's existance.

Is it something that I can see about myself or does the dealer have to do it?

The dealer is sorting my 7day honda free insurance so he can tax it ASAP I assumed this was something they did to avoid delay or mess ups with insurances?

Especially when transfering the plate cos surely it's not possible to have a cover note in the one car type to tax it and still be insured on your current car!

I reckon a call to the ins company could sort that out on the phone.

The way I see it, is that you have two cars both with the same no. plate!

Surely you are trading one for 'tother.

You therefore would not own both at the same time.

It just needs carefull timing with the change over.

I thought that the Ins co would be able to oblige there!

You would think so wouldnt you?

I think the main problem (in my dad's case) was the tax was done several days before he picked the car up - obviously you need a cover note to tax the car but you arent gonna use THAT car until you pick it up several days later hence you still need the original car insured - he asked his insurance company and they said you can only run the 2 cars on the same policy with the same plate for 24 hrs and since it took over 10 days for the DVLA to swap the plates they refused to do it.

In the end he told the dealer about the 7 day honda insurance and they looked into it and realised they could offer 7 days free too so he got a cover note from them and changed his existing policy the day he picked the car up!

In the old days, the DVLA would do transfers over the counter, but they don't do that any more. Last time I went to transfer a number I had to take the cherished number certificate, V5, tax disc and (if needed) the MOT certificate. Imagine my disappointment when they told me that it would be about 1-2 weeks before I got the new tax disc and authorisation to put the new plates on. That was a couple of years ago. With more and more cars and more and more cherished registrations on the road, I can't imagine that things have got any better. Whenever I've gone to the DVLA place, there's always a massive queue even before they open. March and September are obviously worse too.

I'm in exactly the same boat as Obo's dad.

I have 24hrs with both cars covered and that's only to do the swap over.

I'm with Swift and they were less than helpful. They said in I would need to take out a seperate policy to cover the new car and cancel the old policy so they are getting two monthly payments and a startup charge for me transfering to a new car. They will not provide a temporary cover note for a week.

Looks like I will have to change insurers again.

Thats EXACTLY what direct line expected my dad to do he managed to get 7 days free through Nissan in the end which gave the dealer a cover note but had run out before he picked the car up.

He was supposed to swap from his BMW to the qashqai then cancel that policy and start up again on the BMW then start another on the qashqai..all very expensive and very pointless!

I feel for you Phantom I really do personally I think the dealer should cover any costs as it's their mistake this must be known by now that the DVLA are taking weeks to do transfers so why cant they send the paperwork sooner?

Just been contacted by the garage as I am due to collect the car this weekend (three weeks after arrival) to be told that the reg still isn't through yet.

The Dundee DVLA are currently working on applications made on the 20th April. Mine was made on the the 23rd April, so it's touch and go if it will be ready by Saturday.

Not a happy camper at the moment.

Mine has been put back too Phantom first cos the car wasnt in and then cos the dealer wasnt aware you can take the forms in early they took mine in on the 4th and arent expecting it back until 16th they are supposedly ringing every day to see if it's ready though.

I rang the DVLA to see and they said they take 7-10 days but it might be sooner there's nothing I can do to hurry it up and I was told they dont do over the counter while you wait transfers anymore!

The annoying thing is the DVLA made the cheaper personalised plates more accessible to everyone and now cant pull their fingers out on transfers!

No word from the garage today, so it looks like the plate hasn't been transfered yet.

Insurance on the ZS runs out tomorrow, so I will phone the garage to see if they will take it until the plate finally comes through. No point in getting charged a third time to change my insurance especially as I still don't know when it will be ready and if they haven't processed it yet and there is no valid insurance then I'm probably gonna have to re submit. That'll be another 4 weeks.

Narked at the insurers as I was sure the Civic premium was going to be less than the ZS, but have been charged twice already to change the car. This months Direct Debit is twice what it normally is as the oribinal policy ends in June.

Phantom, Follow this lead on Monday
We have also been waiting for a long while (car has been in garage 2 weeks) - put the documents in on 25th April - dealer hasnt chased up for us (Car was ordered on 5th March!)
Whilst at work today - my wife gave Swansea a ring asking why such a delay - because we are desperate for the car as we are due to go on holiday - etc etc (sob story really) They then put her through to local office in the North East
And guess what - I pick the car up at 9 a.m tommorrow!
They did the paperwork in half an hour !!!!!!
I feel that this is the dealers moving their sales around to meet their targets- at the expense of the customer
Until today the dealer was still telling us another two weeks delay (that would have been 4 weeks in total at DVLA)
yet a quick phone call our plate transfer was complete within the hour
I fully agree witht he other posts that the DVLA want to sell these private plates then P*ss you about when you want to swap them over - Oh! and charge you £80 for the privelege of been messed about

Thats really interesting Pabtyper, (WELCOME BTW) it obviously depends who you speak to!
I rang the DVLA on Tuesday and my paperwork wasnt showing as being submitted, when I asked the guy on the phone (in Swansea) if I could push it through anyway he said "no it takes 7 -10 days from when it's taken in"

The dealer spoke to someone who said that there's no reason why it cant be done immediately but this person couldnt do it themselves but said to call every day. I was gonna call them today but didnt get chance not that it matters cos stupid dealer hasnt put 2 and 2 together to realise I cant take it until the city pack has been fitted and it's not even there yet!

Good news!

The paperwork is in and the car is ready to collect, and they phoned at 2pm (to my home number ) to say I could collect it this afternoon.

Great! Only problem is that I need to change my insurance back (again), and I'm busy all this week so wont be able to collect it til the weekend.
