Legal matter....

Hi Everyone,

I hope there's someone on here who can help clarify things for me a bit.....

In 2 weeks time, I'm gonna be driving my Civic from Portugal to the UK to live permanantly. I can't afford to pay the bank off for the rest of the car just yet, so I can't sell it before I go - thus having to take it over there with me.

My question is, am I allowed to use the car in the UK for 6 months, or do I have to keep it off the road until it's re-registered???

Furthermore, how can I re-register it in the UK if the car isn't actually 100% mine (the bank still own some of the car)??

Also, unlike the UK spec cars, mine doesn't have a Kms - Mph convertor switch.....so that'll be an issue if I do eventually decide to re-register it....that's not gonna be cheap to sort is it??

I hope there's someone who knows a bit about this kinda thing to help me through all the Jargon I've just read on the DVLA's website......

Cheers, Mark.

You could sell it back to a garage etc - as the money they would pay you would pay off the loan. Maybe leave you with a deposit for a right-hand drive UK model.

I'll check it out for you in work tomorrow mark. I was dealing with something similar recently. If you are visiting the country you can drive the car as it is for either six months or a year (can't remember which) as it is, if you intend to drive the car permanently over here you need to register it as a UK vehicle. I assume you have a UK licence already?

Cheers everyone. Yes CP I do have a UK licence, so there's no issues there, furthermore, my insurance over here is with a Company thats affiliated to a UK company (can't remember which) so it SHOULD be a doddle to change the insurance over to a UK policy.

Scott - I am moving over because I have just become a Policeman with Notts Police.

With regards to selling it to a garage, that be a great way to get shot of it, but the problem is that the ownership document I have for the car says in the 'other information' part, that part of the vehicle still belongs to the Bank (providing you can read Portuguese that is!)

Mark,It's my understanding from the legislation that you can drive a foreign registered car in the UK for up to a year although once you intend to live and work in the UK permanently the car must be re-registered. As long as you sort things within a year you won't have any problems. CZ

That's a massive relief - cheers CP....I've been offered £8,000 by a LHD specialist in Notts for the car, which would go a long way toward either buying something VERY nice 2nd hand, or as a decent deposit on a Type R.....we'll see.......
