When the Civic was launched, the press assummed it would get a 5 star NCAP rating, like the Golf, Astra, Focus, Citroen C4, Corolla and Auris [yuck]. It didn't. It get 4 stars.
Having seen the difference between a staged crash comparing a 3 and 5 star rated vehicles, I seriously wouldn't want to be in a 3 star one*. I wonder how far away the Civic was from getting its 5th star? A visit to the ncap website www.euroncap.com didn't throw any light, but since some cars get a 'half' rating, e.g. 3 and a half stars, I suspect the Civic is a bit away from getting that final star. It would be interesting to find out in which area[s] it fell short and what Honda might be doing about it - if anything. *Fifth gear about 18 months ago. 3 star was an older Range Rover, and I think the 5 star car was a Focus. |

Because it wasn't good enough to get 5...
I personally think the star system isn't great, i think grading cars out of 10 would be a much better indicator. Surely you have cars that barely made the 5 stars, yet some that really excelled, that difference isn't highlighted. 4 stars isn't bad though, I think Honda were surprised the most! |

OOps. It seems that the reason[s] were discussed last December on this very forum - sorry to anyone feeling frustrated cos I should have known that. I did search this site honest but clearly not deep enough. Apparently its down to passenger safety, accelerator pedal movement and steering adjuster knob. See the thread "NCAP rating now available - only 4 stars" and the 83 replies..
