Discretion is not so relevant anymore, not for us anyway, we get questioned if we don't dish out tickets and now the home office are setting monthly targets to meet which takes away any sensibility and need for common sense. I prefer to take time and give advice rather than shock and awe with tickets and points. People learn more from an officer taking 10-15mins and giving reasons why their behaviour is unacceptable. The wrong attitude just breeds resentment and mistrust.

I agree with morpheous that this will not work on everyone but thats played by ear and dealt with accordingly. certain offences are inexcusable.

My one (and only!) speeding ticket was given to me about 20 years ago, for doing 43 in a 30

Whilst completly my fault, I did actually think it was a 40 zone! (open road in between 2 villages, but with street lights )

However, more to the point, the lecture (and the ticket) was given to me by a friend from school, and the talk about speeding was punctuated by chat about how his wife (my ex-girlfriend!) and kids were, and how he had given tickets to several of our classmates

Did the job though - I can safely say, hand on heart, that I have been much more aware of 30mph limit zones ever since.

The point about speeding, and particularly speed cameras is that discretion is completely taken out of the equation. We all accept that speeding in a built up area in broad daylight is a complete no-no (and I'd advocate a mandatory 20mph limit around schools too) but being flashed doing 60 in a 50 at 3am in the morning with a MANDATORY 3 points and £60 fine is grossly unfair. In the good old days a copper would pull you over and as long as you were sober, civil and not driving recklessly a polite reminder to ease back off the throttle was generally all that was required and maybe a five day wonder.

People lost respect for the police when the police stopped treating them like human beings.

I should add that I have 3 points for doing 43 in a 30. Gutted, it was a mobile unit, but hands up and a fair cop.

Interesting story and nice to see the police using some common sense rather than going by the book.

Complete opposite to my mate who was followed for a few miles down a quiet motorway one night, he stuck to 70 - officer pulled him over and tried to tell him he had been doing 85+ - my mate stayed calm and polite and the officer didn't show him any in-car camera footage of his speed, presumably he had none, gave him a verbal warning and let him go.... very dodgy!

Where abouts on the A12?

I take it you mean the old A12 north of Ipswich.

Dodgy bit of road that!

Yes. It was actually just south Blythburgh. The speed limit swings from 30 to 40 and even up to 70mph and obviously you have to go through villages etc. No excuse for me not noticing the signs though

June 22:

A date that has haunted me for weeks....

I was at the hospital that morning to see a surgeon for a pre-operative assesment and despite my appointment being at 9:30am and supposedly only for an hour to an hour and a half tops I waited nearly three hours (2 hours past when I'd told my boss I'd be back!). When I'd seen the surgeon, fresh from a urgent patient in A&E, I jumped in the horrid car (a Vauxhall Corshit 1.2) and made my foot to the floor dash to work before the boss sacked me....

Skip forward a week and a bit....

Get home and do the usual check the post....notice one for the wife (cars in her name)... open it up and lo and behold it's a NOP (Notice of Intended Prosecution). Suffice to say I thought "bugger".....

Anyway, wife comes home and I fess up and she duly (given that she works for the Met) dobs me in.

Skip forward another week and a bit and the NOP arrives in my name.....

Now being that this is the first time I've ever been done for speeding and not knowing what to expect I feared the worst and investigated what I was up against (for being 39 in a 30mph road) and if there was any hope of getting off....

A few websites later I had come to the conclusion I had three options:

1. Admit the offence and not sign (upside that someone had got off with the downside being it could go straight to court for obstruction).

2. Hire a solicitor (again maybe get off maybe get a huge fine and more points and have to pay solicitor)

3. Fess up completely and take the punishment.

I chose option 3.

And well, after a few weeks of worry I got the end result of my wrongdoing....

£73 for a Speed Awareness Workshop and a clean licence.

Let me tell you - I know I'm extremly lucky and have adjusted my driving since I even got the first notice. And I'd say to anyone - don't try and be clever..... Any trick you try to pull to get off will more often than not end up as a red rag to a very powerful bull........

If you have a clean licence presumably that doesn't affect your insurance re-newal?

I got 3 points and £60 fine for doing 69 (in a 60 zone) on the A1 a few years ago, and each year since it seemed to add about £30 to my insurance renewal!

Terry.

You shouldn't be penalized by your insurance company for a single 3 point speeding offence. If you have been, I suggest you shop around as the majority of companies I've dealt with don't 'up your premium' just on that basis...
