Not sure myself to be honest. My Last few petrol cars just had some form of Rotor Housing (probably containing magnetic contacts), with Low Tension Cables that linked to a strange shape Ballast Coil type thing. All of the HT cables where then attached to its square end !
Who knows with this modern mystical electronic whizztrickery!
I bet Pottsy and TT know!

Oh dear - looks like Gloucester/Cheltenham/Tewkesbury are going down... No tap water for up to 14 days & likely no power for the next 5 days... catch up with y'all in a week-ish.

Glug glug glug...

The Uk flooding was the second title at the French news this morning. They did even speak of one of the Top Gear journalist who let his Porsche to run 26 Km to go back home in time for his girl's birthday.

They say also the the situation will not improve in the following days because of the rivers flooding

I hope they're wrong !

Still no water & loads of other peoples' homes are flooded but apparently the worst is now most likely behind us in Gloucester...

Ive been reading this thread with increasing concern. To ask if its OK to drive through water?.....Er...NO!!
You've only got to ingest water through the air intake and its VERY expensive...even a new engine. To say that diesels are safer than petrol is complete rubbish!!

Pay attention at the back - I HAD to drive through water, not by choice, to get home.

Therefore I was asking, given at the time the flood waters were still rising, how high the water can be before I'm likely to get into trouble & what is the best approach to getting my Civic through successfully.

I am trying to avoid joining the ranks of people with shafted cars while still being able to get around to/from work etc.

Thanks for the warning but sometimes you don't have a choice as I am sure many of your fellow Yorkshiremen already know or are now discovering.

Thats not what I said. If you run your car through deep water, you run the risk of knackering your engine, petrol or diesel, replies seem to suggest that its less risky in a diesel. Hope this clears that up

The floods in Yorkshire were concentrated in an area around Sheffield,Doncaster,Rotherham areas of South Yorkshire and Hull, Humberside/East Yorkshire three weeks ago and a small area around Filey (North Yorkshire) last week (Flash flood from a thunderstorm)
The vast majority of Yorkshire and indeed its Yorkshiremen and women were unaffected. We had no rain in West Yorkshire last Friday until after 5pm.
Hope these facts help you to understand the situation in Yorkshire

Thanks for that - there are, as I said, going to be some men & women, children, cats & dogs etc in Yorkshire, born & bred or otherwise who are familiar with the situation outlined there upon, not withstanding etc blah etc blah.

Thanks for the chuckle.

Tell that to a mate of mine at work. Drove his Pug 307 HDi through about a foot of water and came to an abrupt halt. Estimate says complete new engine due to bent rods and popped bearing caps......

There is so little space in the cylinder at TDC on a diesel that it only takes a small amount of water and you get 'Hydroloc'. Couple that with the modern tendency to have air intakes set fairly low for aerodynamic reasons (You can see the intercooler on the Accord through the intake next to the nearside foglight) and it's only a matter of time....
