Changing Car

Hi all, atm I've got a 09 plate Type R which I absolutely love. I've got myself a new job after 6 months of unemployment which is going to involve very early starts.

The journey to work is a 90 mile round trip and I'm realizing that with that trip and the price of fuel the Type R is going to be expensive.

I want to stay with Civic and have been looking at a few different vehicles and along with the local garages have been offered two deals.....

A 1.8 Civic Ti (petrol), registered in Aug 11 with 9000 miles. The garage will give me 10,500 for the Type R and with a small deposit its gonna cost me £270 a month. Obviously just a Civic SE with a body kit, 17" alloys and fancy sat nav. This is the dealers demo model they wanna let go.

Or.....

A 2.2 Civic ES (diesel 2012 model) with mats, Superguard treated interior and 17" Radium Alloys fitted as extra in polished metal colour (deep grey). This is again a demo model they want to sell and only has 1,400 miles on it. They have priced it at £20,500 (I priced it as new on Honda's site and it was just under £24k) and will only give me £9100 for the Type R and with a small deposit it works out at £400 a month.

Both are as new in condition. I'm worried about losing the auto wipers and lights and electric door mirrors that the Type R has but the nice thing about the Ti is it does look funky. The low monthly really (its only £10 a month more than what I pay for the R) appeals to me but deep down a niggle bites telling me its just a SE.

The 2.2 diesel appeals as although they are classing it as 2nd hand its new to me (with only 1,400 miles on it). It has all the features I'm used to (and a bit more) I know the new Civic shape is either loved or hated but I think in the dark grey polished metal colour with the Radium alloys its looks quite sporty. The little niggle biting says its a lot of money a month and the fact that no one seems to say the same thing about diesel. I've spoken to 4 different dealers and some say I will not see the benefit of diesel with the miles I'm doing, and combining that fact with the extra price of diesel I should go for petrol. The feeling I get is they'll tell me what sells the car they have!!

Any advice would really be appreciated guys, there's going to be tears when I let the Type R go ( please dont come back with "the Type R will be fine" I've had people tell me their mpg in their R is anything from 35 - 50mpg.) I know I drive my Type R fairly heavily and can only get 30ish at the best.

Thanks all
Trev

Any chance of just buying a decent old diesel for travelling and keep the type R? My old 206 2.0 hdi done good mpg and has a solid block and you can get them for next to nothing. No point wrecking a good car with loads of miles a month

With the mileage you will be doing I really think diesel is the way to go. If you want all the bells and whistles why not go for something a little older, say 2/3 years old, that could well bring something like an EX GT with all the toys in to range.

ok, BOTH cars are 'used', they both have a previous owner but as you say, both demonstrators so no real issue there.

basically, at 141p per litre and 42.8mpg on petrol, it'll cost you £3,744.08 to do 25k pa.
Diesel, 147p per litre and 53.3mpg, it'l cost you £3,134.44 to do 25k, a difference of £609.64 in favour of the diesel - per annum

However, you'll be paying £130 a month more and then there's servicing which will cost more., leaving you at least £950.36 a year better off on the petrol...

dilemmas.....

Trev, it a dilemma that I don't envy that you have to make, a slightly older EX GT which Lincspoacher put forward is probably the way I would go to be honest. Am sure you will have plenty of replies to mull over. Of course a full service history is a must
Best of luck

Thanks for all the info guys. I'm really struggling. The dealers are trying to push me towards an older 2.2 diesel EX with 24k and a 2007 plate but the thing is (I'm prob being stupid here) a bit of me is bulking at buying a car that is older than the one I have.

The dealer that has the demo 2.2, 2012 diesel has just called and said that he looked in to the running costs of the new diesel and has said tbh I'd be better off buying a brand new 1.8 petrol if I was looking at spending that kind of cash (is he saying that because he has "new sales" figures to hit??)

I've been spoilt rotten by the looks of the Type R that I own now, even the dealer has said its one of the best condition Type R's he's seen and I get out of it most days and smile at it (sad huh!!)

I'm not a boy racer (I'm an old git at 39!!) but having only been driving for coming up to 2 years I like to have a nice car, and the Ti does look nice. It's just the fact that its a base model "old style" Civic deep down.

Just gas convert your Type R it's just over a grand then all you have to do is put abit of petrol in and run your car on gas most of the time. It'll bring your car tax down, only 80p ltr and the tank will fit into your boot storage space nicely. Cause it's gonna be cheaper than paying £400 per month and you still keep your Type R. Thats what I'm doing in November. Go for the Prins gas convertion as thats the one that I've seen recommended for Honda Type R's. Hope that helps?

Oi careful with the old git bit you said I'm not far off. ;-P . Join the T.A. and and spend a couple of weekends a year playing silly buggers and getting just over a grand for your troubles.

I'd keep the R, you say you drive fairly heavily. Drive like that in the 1.8 and it will also return lowish mpg (around 35), the diesel will fair better but will also struggle to reach your expectations.
I think if you drive the R sensibly and 65ish at the motorway i think you can get it to 40 mpg.
Do they pay for the miles at your new work or is it all on your own cost? 180 miles daily commute is quite a lot!
If they pay for it, i think its a no brainer!

Just because that's what they are pushing doesn't mean you have to go that way, you must have other dealers in the surrounding area find out via the net to see what's out there, if they haven't got it am sure they can get what you want
If its a EX or EX GT1.8, again best of luck

I test drove the 1.8 Civic Ti earlier today and we reset the mpg when we left the garage - when we got back to the garage it was 36.5 mpg. I've just taken the Type R around exactly the same route and drove like I did with the Ti (and the sales rep in the car ) and I got 33.5 mpg.

Normally I'm quite heavy on the revs pulling away from standstill where I tried to change gear much earlier this time - a bit like the Ti's shift indicator was telling me to.

It just seems silly to change the car and increase my monthly repayment by £25 for 3-7 mpg's benefit.

I'm the same mate, I'm starting a new job which is 70 miles one way! How ever I get £300 to help with fuel, so in all around £180 I have to put too,

Just drive 60-65, you'll be fine, I would never get rid of my R for work! Ha

I do 120 miles a day in my CTR. Full tank lasts three days, 360 miles. This is about 33 MPG. There was no saving to be had for me changing car or getting another run about so the CTR is racking the miles up q

You must be on 100k a year, hehe.

Amazed how people do so many miles in a Type R. Whats the point if it's pottering to work and trying to get highest MPG you can?

I done this sum before I got my ctr. Tbh I was looking at a Leon fr diesel but with the cost of diesel now adays the difference of nearly 10p is just not worth it plus I prefer the drive and noise of a petrol.

The only way you could make a saving is go LPG and lose ** lower folding boot.

Plus would save you the extra 9grand on the diesel u would be buying log plus more mods if u have that money to burn?

If your gonna go for anything go for a prius as that's the only way you would gain after 20years of driving it which u won't.

Keep the type r and debate a lpg conversion. might be best decision u ever made.
