What's French for 'Diesel'?

I'm off to France next week and just had a thought. How are diesel pumps labelled on French forecourts?

I'd hate to fill up with unleaded due to a chronic lack of ignorance of the lingo.

I´m sure l-noel will be able to answer this one!

I do however believe Diesel is called Diesel even in France, but there may well be different grades and stuff you should know about. I think petrol is "essence" so stay clear of that.

That would be a good addition to say the Honda Pan-European service place guide - a list of what petrol and diesel type you should buy in each country!

well plomb is lead anyway, so that would make sense.

Le diesel.
Le pétrole - petrol
L'essence - fuel (general term e.g. essence aviation)
Le gazole - gas

If you're unsure, just ask the pump attendant or cashier.

Hi all,

In france, for diesel you will see either "Gasoil" or "Diesel". In some stations you can find different types of diesel, some with additives, but all are compatible with your Civic.

Petrol may be named "essence" or "super" but more generally "sans-plomb" or "SP". To kinds of "sans plomb" coexist: "SP95" and "SP98" (different octane level).

Finally, in order to free your mind about this, just note that (generally) Diesel pumps have are yellow and petrol pumps are green.

Best Regards from France.

I believe DERV is the abbreviation of Diesel Engined Road Vehicle and is only really used in the UK.

I seem to remember seeing diesel in France labelled as Diesel, Gasoil or Gazole.
