To the continent...

Dear All

Please forgive me if these questions are a bit basic but I am about to take my Civic off to Europe.

Question 1:

Is it possible to lock the car without switching on the alarm? (I am thinking to prevent the alarm going off with the motion of the ferry).

Question 2:

Does anyone have a picture/advice in respect of exactly where the headlamp adaptors need to go (I have standard Halfords ones).

Cheers

Paul

I've travelled on the cross-channel ferries a few times and never had the embarassment of the captain asking me to return to the car deck to switch off the *** alarm

There is a picture on here somewhere about the headlight masks, I use the translucent round one that you cut the surplus off, think they may have been Halfords, there's a circle mark on the headlamp lens.

Bon voyage, if you are going booze shopping Auchan and Carrefour are your friends

Ignore the Ferry Alarm warning - just lock and go ! ...

You do know about the various requirements in Europe ? ...
  • Hi-Viz vest for everybody (accessible inside the car)
  • Set of spare lightbulbs (fuses recommended)
  • First Aid Kit \ Emergency Kit
  • Etc., etc., etc. ...
Dependent on where you are going, of course ..

Thank you everyone. Those pictures are superb.

I have all the rest of my kit (the Civic's first time in France but not my own). Spare Bulbs, triangles, hi viz and now brethalyzers as well.

Useless idea that brethalyzer requirement, surely? If you even think you need to use a brethalyzer then you shouldn't drive.

Cheers

I think the reason behind it is:-

a) Don't have them on board then fine, because that's what les flics can do!
b) If someone is caught over the limit then jack up the penalty as you have even less excuse as you should have known by the test!

Note: The Breathalyzers do have expiry dates and also need to comply with the necessary requirements, think its a "F" number...

Yep - most of Europe :-

1) random testing is legal
2) the blood alcohol limit is 50mg (UK is 80)

Worse in Scandinavia - 20 ! - hardly more than a sniff of the barmaid's apron

Don't forget to also make sure your sat nav doesn't warn you where speeding cameras are as thats illegal in France the breathalyser isn't a legal requirement till July. As for the Alarm if your worried lock it with the keys, but mine never goes of and I use the Ferries quite abit. My last car had an Alarm that went of when somebody started their car next to it but on the ferry it was fine. You can always tell on Mitsi's when the alarms gone off.

I tend to use the "lavage" at the closest supermarket to the ferry to give the car a bit of a tidy up, the high pressure hot water makes life easy to get rid of the dead bugs etc...

I've been on the Dover-Calais run several times and just locked it normally.

I guess that if things got really rough it could trigger it.

Or buy the Eurolight ones and reuse them. We've done this the last few times. They peeled off really well, and then I just stuck them back on grease proof paper.
