Thanks for the red dot link, there was some interesting info in there.
It is strange how there is a lot of references to Japanese culture and Japanese aesthetics in the design, but Japan get a different car. Manufacturer's in Japan seem to now design their European cars in Europe or America to suit our sensibilities.

Although the Euro Civic is partly designed in Europe (11 different countries I recall) there are several things in common between ours, the US and the JDM versions.

They design different cars for different markets.

I don't really think the Civic is all that radical, it has four wheels, doors, an engine, some seats etc. It does look funky but there's nothing radical. It doesn't drive on water or float above the ground. It doesn't drive itself. Its just a normal hatchback with some funky styling and an unusual dash.

I don't really think the Civic is all that radical,
- Driven a Focus recently?

it has four wheels
- big ones!

doors
- with hidden handles on the rear ones

an engine
- a i-VTEC in mine

some seats
- MAGIC rear seats

if you think the Civic is ordinary - go out and drive some VWs, Fiats, Fords, Vauxhalls....

Yes but those are nothing new!

Seat Leons have hidden handles, Alfa's have had them for years, it's not the first i-vtec to be put in a Honda either!

I'm not slagging the Civic off, hey I drive one and I love it! My point is that no part of it is radical, it's just originally styled and different.

Surely somebody must agree with me!

Came up behind a Merc C200 2 door Kompressor 03 plate this sunday afternoon. Was more than a little surprised to see an almost identical rear window to the Civic - 2 piece,no wiper and with a black horizontal divider. With the Civic's rear passenger door Alfa style handles, seems maybe someone has done a bit of 'research' into what to put into 'next year's model'

Fair play the Civic has loads of its own original features/styling cues.

don't think there is any one thing on the Civic, which in itself, is radical - but the way it is all bought together is what makes it

I do!

The Honda design people put together some fancy stuff, all in one car, but there is on no level something completely revolutionary. I like it, very much indeed. It sets new levels in design and innovation and puts the competition behind in some domains, but on other levels there's still work to do.

K.
