Miles Per Gallon
Just recently I've noticed that I am getting more miles per gallon. I have had the car for around 11 months now and bought the car brand new last year with 50 delivery miles averaging 37MPG up until now the car has done 10,000 miles and I am now averaging around 43MPG city driving. Which is quite a massive improvement. Am I right in thinking that as I'm putting more miles on the engine, its getting more efficent?

Yes, that's not unusual. Takes a little while for the engine to break in to show it's true performance.

Mines is a 1.4 Type-S
Drove to edinburgh on the weekend, averaged 50.7 MPG (190 miles) which is pretty decent for a petrol as the new blue motion diesel Golfs average about 55MPG Last edited by Aqib; 17th July 2012 at 09:10. |

I live in a rural area but most trips are only up to about 12 miles i average 45 out my diesel and wife has a 1.8 petrol she averages 42. On the motorway i average about 45 to 47 depending on speed and not driving for economy

Yes, over 50mpg is easy to achieve on long open road journeys. I can always get 55-58mpg going from Kirkcaldy to Glasgow. Thats doing at least 70mph on the motorway but always driving with economy in mind. I see you stay in Glasgow, but you said you done 190 miles on a drive to Edinburgh. Round trip presumably, but still, how does that work out?

If you reset your fuel computer before you left Glasgow, done 70 miles driving around the streets of Edinburgh, then still on a 50.7 average by the time you got back to Glasgow.....i would say thats much more than pretty descent. Im not sure without trying but i dont think i could do that, because while its easy for me to get mid 50's on long journeys, it is greatly reduced when in an urban environment. The higher the distance covered, the longer it takes to influence the average mpg, so having done only 60 miles mainly motorway driving before hitting Edinburgh, my average would probably drop to low 40's after 70 miles of urban driving. Which after having covered 130 miles, would probably not go back up to over 50 after the return motorway journey. Well done to you. Last edited by Ron240; 17th July 2012 at 11:27. |

My CTR over the past 1K miles has averaged 35.5mpg. I have done school runs, sprited drives and also a few long journey trips too.
I have noticed the mpg go up since using premium fuel. |

350 miles to a tank for me, and mine spends 90% of the time on cruise at 70
Did london and back on cruise at 70 and only just got over 400 so cant understand how people can get more than that driving normally

I average 52mpg out of mine on general mixed driving. Pushing it it'll drop to about 45mpg. On long runs and taking it easy I hit high 50's.
Mine is the 1.4. Petrol engines are far more economical now and the whole diesel economy thing is all nonsense unless you are rattling up stupid mileage each year. I don't know how many test's I've read about that calculates stupidly high mileage numbers (I.e. 40k per year) before diesels start to save you over buying and running a petrol equivalent. |
