Number plates

Could I ask you guys a couple of questions about plates, sure a few of you know a lot more than me on the subject!

Are plates like this legal? (UK) - designed here: Plates for Cars Designer

(obviously this isnt my real reg )

Click the image to open in full size.

The only real reason I was looking into new plates is that the plastic on mine is peeling off, and seems to be bubbling up too, making it look pretty poor.

Also, are plates easy to swap over?? I did do a search on this but seem to have more questions now than answers, people mentioned drilling n stuff. Anyone used this site or similar and replaced theirs

Any help would be much appreciated, thanks.

To replace them just unscrew them and screw the new ones in place, they should line up with the old screw holes.

It not quite as easy as that ^^^^You would need to drill the new plate first though, do this from the back to the front to stop the reflective backing separating from the front and to get the holes in the same place put the old plate on top of the new one and drill through. As for being legal they need to be spaced correctly and should show the name of garage/supplier at the bottom and a British standard number in bottom right corner but I don't know anybody that has either of them and get no problems as long as they are correctly spaced

They don't come pre drilled?

Plates in OZ do.

No, as some folks have holders etc. for their plates and don't need them drilling so you do it yourself.

I would suggest drilling from the front to the back to prevent peeling - I've always done it this way with painted surfaces, masonry etc as usually the "exit" side suffers more damage.

As far as layouts etc. go (I can't see the above image as I'm in the office) generally if it can be read by ANPR the police won't pull you just for the plate. But that's certainly not a rule!

That's a fair point, if the old plate wasn't drilled and the bumper hasn't got any holes in it then don't make some... stick it on! You can get the double sided foam stuff from Halfords - I used it for the cowl creak fix.

Ill look at that as id rather not drill em. Just had a look at my plates again and they are drilled, and the OEM holder (i assume anyway) looks like its coming off soon.. Was looking at these - HONDA number plate frame holder surround + screws | eBay

In halfords they do 1mm or 6mm think sticky pads I've used them for years with no problems, I think the GB bit on the side should be blue not black

If you drill from the front to the back to risk pushing the sticky backing off the plastic front and leaving plastic swarf meaning moisture can get in and cause the plate to look unsightly and if enough area separates its an MOT failure.
Its been part of my job for years

In that case there must be a set standard for where the plates are drilled, and all car dealers in Australia must stick to it.
UK car dealers drill plates anywhere they like, so the chances of finding 2 cars with plates that match up exactly is pretty slim.
Ive been transferring my personal number plate from car to car for the past 15 years, and ive never had 2 that were drilled in the same place.

I currently have a chrome Honda logo surround stuck to the tailgate of my Civic with the number plate stuck inside it. The surround has 3 raised sections on the back for attaching double sided tape, but after being on the car for about a year now, i noticed yesterday that the edges have came unstuck from the tailgate. Its not going to fall off because the centre is still very securely stuck, and you dont notice it unless you look closely.....but this is the potential problem with sticking number plate surrounds to curved surfaces.

The plates we get come pre drilled when you get them whether they came like that from the dealer or you got a set of custom ones from the road registration office they all have 6 on the top and 2 on the bottom.
As far as i know they always come like this and you can't request that they do not get holes.

Use some double sided sticky pads, save yourself the bother of having to drill and possibly even damaging the plate. Used some sticky pads on my plate last year and they are still going strong.
