Only as far as Harwich - ferry to Esbjerg in Denmark today - right leg is giving me "gypp" now, after over 5500 Km / 3300 Miles driving, etc. - so, minimising the driving on the way home

Although, today's drive (Glasgow to Harwich) - 8 hours, including several short stops - was not enjoyable at all - SO many prats on the road, obviously allergic to the inside lane ! - must have undertaken more vehicles than I overtook

Asimo Date : 14.09.2012 : Friday

Day 21 of JDR's Log

Up early, for the drive from Glasgow to Harwich, as I had decided to take the ferry to Esbjerg (Denmark) ...

Theoretically, a 7 hour drive, so I left before 08:00, for a latest 17:00 check-in - i.e. over 9 hours allowed ...

Several short stops on the way, plus heavy congestion on the A120 ...

Only just made it !!! - got to the check-in booth at 16:54 - only 6 minutes to spare ...

Anyway, on to the ship, unwind with Internet Tablet & Kindle - dinner at 21:00 - couple of glasses of nice 'Amerone' with it - large G&T afterwards - then off to bed (knackered, again) ...

Too right mate - just arrived at a Hotel on the south coast of Norway, about 45 minutes ago (00:30 'CET') - shattered, but need a sandwich and a drinkie-pooh or three, to unwind - 4 hour drive in the morning, to get home - but, I restart work on Monday, after 8 months "on the sick" (in Trondheim !), and I begin with a continuous 12 day stint ...

Asimo Date : 15.09.2012 : Saturday

Day 22 of JDR's Log

O.K - arrived in Esbjerg (Denmark) on the 'dot' of 13:00 - was off of the ship by 13:05 ! ...

Set the SatNav for the trip North, to a port called Hirtshals, for the 3+ hour trip to Kristiansand on the South coast of Norway ...

Plenty of time - 3 hours or so drive, but some 6+ hours to check-in time - but I needed a lot more than 3 hours ! - so fatigued (just like the Glasgow to Harwich drive) - sleepy so often, and kept pulling over for a short nap ...

There is (for me) something about the trip home, that just makes my body \ constitution 'give in' on the way back - happens almost every time, whether by "Train or Plane or Automobile" ...

Anyway, arrived in Kristiansand more or less on time (ETA 23:59 'CET'), but took a bit of time to get out of the Port (ferry was full), so although my Hotel was only about a kilometer away, I didn't get there until a little after 00:30 'CET' ...

Totally shattered, yet still 'jumpy' (?) and badly needing to unwind \ chill out \ empty my head - now successfully done, with aid of a bottle of local Beer and a couple of Cognacs and a decent Roast Beef Sandwich ...

Oh, and I was stopped by Norwegian Customs ("Toll Politi") coming in ! - this time, I was VERY concerned - thousands of Pounds worth of Antique Gold and Silver Coins (all mine, but no receipts), my rather large 50 year old Train Set, a pile of gifts from my Mother to my Children, and all the "retail therapy" I had in the UK ...

But, again - no worries - I just told the very polite and friendly Officer the truth (usually works best) and he simply said "thank you, have a nice night" ...

p.s. - it's a bloody good job, that the Civic can really lug a big load - car was (once again) sunk by an extra couple of inches at the rear - which (with hindsight) was probably why I was stopped ...

p.p.s. - now approaching 6000 Km on this trip (even after having taken the "ferry shortcut" on the way back) - going to be well over 6000 Km before I finally get home ...

Last edited by J. Derek Riddell; 16th September 2012 at 02:56. Reason: the p.s. and the p.p.s. ...

!!! Home !!! ...

Asimo Date : 16.09.2012 : Sunday

Day 23 of JDR's Log

Aahhhh - finally - home again ...

Up at around 10:15 in Kristiansand, breakfast, then departure for home about 11:00 ...

SatNav said 3.5 hours - and it took almost exactly that - little traffic on Sunday, although what there was, usually 'dawdled' (Sunday drivers ) ...

There were a few exceptions though ...
  • 1} A BMW 5 series (I think it was a 525i ?) tried to pass me on an uphill stretch of dual lane - started to overhaul me (more torque than my Civic), but I then dropped 2 gears, and floored it - he gave in and fell back ...
  • 2} A Land Rover 'Evoque' (no idea what engine) had the cheek to indicate to overtake me - NO CHANCE - pedal to the metal, and it was suddenly 100 metres behind me ...
  • 3} Similar stories for about 3 other 'incidents' - even with another huge load in the back and boot, overtook everything - glorious engine note (addictive, in fact) ...
So, home around 14:30, unpacked (what an amount and weight of stuff !) - and put the Rib Roast in the oven, at a not very high temperature, around 16:00 - mmmmmmm, nice beef ! - dinner around 19:30 (remember, it's "CET" !), and now a Barbados Rum or two, before I collapse into my OWN bed ...

p.s. - I'm totally (about 250%) 'shattered' - long tour, great fun, hugely rewarding, rather exhausting ! ...

p.p.s. - mobilisation to my new job is deferred to Tuesday, as there is no way I'll be fit for anything on Monday ...

p.p.p.s. - looking forward to a good "try out" of my Civic tomorrow, without the some 400 \ 500 Kg extra weight on board ...

Doing my damndest ! - camera has them (I can view them all on its screen) - but reading / copying / converting them to ".jpg" files is proving to be a problem

However, I've done it before - tomorrow, I'll able to "multi-task" again - today, I can't walk and talk, at the same time

KNACKERED !!!
