Pulling Power - Men & Motors last night

Did anyone see Pulling Power last night, they had a piece where the "boy racers" cars were pitted against "oldies" cars, at the beginning of the section they showed 5 of each. One was a Civic, didn't see what group it was in but they never showed it on film, it was basically a race from a standing start down a straight course, "would you beat an old boy off the lights".

This is not the first time a programme has eluded to showing a Civic (Top Gear cool wall being another one). What is so unappealling about the Civic?

How long did it take for Skoda jokes to wear out? Dim journos will keep the same stereotypes until many years of "it's changed, now" have elapsed.

I saw something only yesterday about Skoda being an embarassing brand. I think it was BBC News Magazine article about brands.

I know this is drifting OT a bit, but Honda suffers to some extent to a poor brand image. No matter how much we try to deny it to ourselves, Honda is synonamous with the older generation of driver. One which we try to keep out of when asked what car we have. It's never a 'Honda' or even a Honda Civic', it's 'a new model Civic, the one with the cool wrap-around lights and spaceship doorhandles!' or something...

Back to Civics on TV shows... The Top Gear cool wall bit was cut out, but Clarkson (shudder) did put in in 'uncool'. But as we know it is 'Crakson's cool wall' as nobody else gets a say.
It was featured on Fifth Gear (i think) a couple of weeks ago for a car demonstarting braking reaction times for older (here we go again) people, and younger driver's reaction time after one or two drinks. I missed the beginning, but I assume they picked the car to represent a morden family car with good handling. I hope.

I hope that terrible show Vroom Vroom doesn't get to 'test' one. The standard test for cars including the girl putting her makeup on while the car drives on a cobbled road, attempting to pull a table cloth without knocking over too much stuff, and ruining a car's front skirt/bumper by driving up a multi story car park fast are ridiculous. The results are so randon, what does it prove?!

Top Gear will get The Stig to do a lap in the Type-R when it comes out, which will be good.

All of us with an interest in motoring, will know that Skoda is a much improved brand. But how many of us , hand on heart, would consider , if we needed a new car right now, actually buying a Skoda. Leave the Civic out of the equation, I don't think many of us would.

The stigma remains, and I don't think the younger generation are ready for Skoda yet.

Actually, my main alternative to the civic was an octavia vRS.

I wanted a Superb when I got my Laguna back in '02, but one of the company directors asked my boss "is business really that bad that we need to buy Skoda, what will customers think". My response was they will see us as a good value for money business that appreciates quality without the need for a badge.

I ended up in a Renault that kept breaking down in customers car parks, what message does that give. Where I work now actually has a "no badges" policy on cars, no BMW's or Mercs.

I mean if you wanted a new car to-day, with your own cash, would you buy a Skoda ?.

Yep! Need something to replace the Yaris, and keep looking at the Fabia vRS.. The key is "with your own cash". If the company was paying, then an extra £1000 or so for a VW/Audi badge on the same car wouldn't be so painful.

I'm with that - If I was in the market for a second car, the vRS would be on the shortlist! Forget the perceived image, the vRS delivers ....

.... and as for Skodas in general, can 250,000 taxi owners be wrong?? - OK, don't answer that!!

A bit OT, but that whole 'cool wall' thing makes me cringe every time I watch it, regardless of what cars are on it / going to go on it.

It's all a bit 'geography teacher at the disco' for me. Top Gear is not cool! It's petrolhead geek porn (I count myself as one, don't get me wrong!), and therefore their opinions on anything remotely subjective towards a car's prescence and 'coolness' is as relevant as, say, a bearded Open University professor rating supermodels in order of how much he'd like to sleep with them.

Not relevant, not appropriate, and completely horrible to watch. It's a tough job to find enough interesting ideas for a motoring show, and TG is still the best out there by miles, but that segment always smacks of "filler" to me.

I agree 100% - We could do with a 'grown-up' motoring programme, but I'm not going to hold my breath on that ...

Only if you're a geography teacher, and are currently at a disco.
