first thing that struck me was the 'made in the UK' bit - which considering its LHD...

I guess if Doody could give us a bit more info on the exact spec it might help decode some bits?

But probably only if we had more examples to go on

They're all made in Swindon.

I guess with those codes Basegreen would have a 1.4 petrol to give him the code for his poor civic (FK1)!

VIN number codes are not completely standard between manufacturers but there is some pattern. All are 17 digits long and have the following form.

1st digit is the country of manufacture. S=England, J=Japan, W=Germany.
2nd digit is the manufacturer's name. F=Ford, H=Honda, V=Volvo.
3rd digit is the vehicle type. H=Civic, S=CRV
4th to 8th digits are for vehicle features such as engine and gearbox, trim level.
9th digit is a check sum.
10th digit is the model year. 6=2006 etc.
11th digit is chosen by the manufacturer and identifies the assembly plant.
12th to 17th digits are just a sequential serial number.

So from a VIN it is possible to tell most of the features of a vehicle but not all.

I have always wondered about these codes, now I know.

Charlie, Great info there but a few minor errors.
The first 3 are part of the WMI code and the 3rd letter doesn't stand for a vehicle type as the Accord built in Swindon also had SHH.
The 9th character can be a check sum , but not generally used in Europe; typically found on US VIN's
EG: http://www.geocities.com/shaymodela/VIN.html

Excellent and useful information though.

I've been thinking about this for a while, so bear with me....

If we know the VIN has a sequential serial number, then we can work out in what order the cars were built. If we couodl find out when the first roled off the line, and how many were made per day, we could predict which VIN numbers were actaully built on a Friday, enabling people to know if they had a Friday car before the rear shocks knocked, the front plastic bit ate the bumper, the boot leaked, the plastic bit came off the clutch pedal etc.

Just a thought.
