Anyone familiar with the A627 in Oldham?

This is almost entirely unrelated to Civic owners but it's bugging me anyway...
I've been to Manchester a couple of times now to see some of my friends who are at uni there, and every time I leave my sat nav takes me out the same way - namely driving through a few confusing road systems, along a 40 zone laced with cameras, onto the A627 (i think) and then onto the M62/60/whatever. The thing that's bugging me is that i'm SURE there are NO speed limit signs whatsoever informing us that the A627 has changed from a 40 laced with cameras to a (presumably) national speed limit zone. I'm only presuming it's national speed limit cause when i first drove down it i was trundling along at 40 (yeah I know, driving the speed limit, madness) until it occurred to me that there was a massive open road, no built up surroundings, and people overtaking me at double my speed.

Can anyone please confirm whether it is actually national speed limit (I dont really fancy gettin caught doin 70 in it if it's a 40) and if so whether there are or ever were any signs informing us as such?

If there are no speed signs and it's street lit to be on the safe side you need to treat it as a 30 (daft I know). There are quite a few wide dual carriage ways now that have stupidly low speed limits.

Don't know for sure on that road though as it's ages since I've been up there.

When I was caught doing 35 in a 30 zone I was given the opportunity to avoid points on my license by being 're-educated'

One of the thing that they told us was that if you don't see speed limt signs at regular intervals the speed limit is EITHER 30, or, the National Speed Limit. The way to tell if it is a 30 zone was for it to be a built up area with regularly space lampposts - otherwise it was an NSL!

Well yeah, there are also no speed limit signs I can see announcing the NSL when you move onto the motorway which is obviously NSL so there must be a point somewhere that it changes from 40, and judging by surroundings it's reasonably easy to guess where that point is. That doesn't really mean the government can just casually forget to put one up though. Unless they knock a penny off my road tax..

hi Minisweeper - I drive that route to work everyday. You're absolutely right that as the 40mph limited road ends and becomes the A627(M) there are no national speed limit signs. The 40mph limit ends at the first junction on on the A627(M), just after a school on the left.

As long as you've past the shool and the slip road at the junction it becomes a 70mph limit I'm sure, but there is no signage - very odd!

Oh good. It's not just me dozing off to sleep at the wheel then! Now when are they putting the accord's lane following system and distance adaptive cruise control in the civic...?!
How very odd though. Maybe they just forgot...might have to try using 'well some roads change speed limit without signs so i thought this one did too' as an excuse if i ever get caught speeding.
