Frightening Experience
Driving round the M25 last week, when all of a sudden, with no warning, the front passenger door window shattered showering the whole of the interior with broken glass. Luckily I was travelling alone at the time but had I had any passengers, they would have been cut to ribbons. I managed to get onto the hard shoulder and pushed out the remainder of the window and had to continue my journey to Bracknell and then home later to Cambridgeshire with no nearside window as AutoGlass could not supply a replacement until the following day. Luckily it wasn't raining, but it was bl**dy cold.
My pride and joy now has scratches down the door and the arm rest is also badly scratched as well as a few cuts in the softer vinyl. I am not a happybunny as they say |

*** - how did that happen???
Glad you're ok though, those glass fragments are really dangerous, just a slight touch and they cut like a surgical knife, plus like you said they damage interior trim far too easily! Be prepared to be finding bits of glass for several months to come, even after a vacuum. I had my TT window broken a year ago and still find the occasional fragment of glass!! |

I wonder - could it have happened when I broke the sound barrier?
Seriously though, I was only crawling along at around 25mph as is usual on the stretch between the A40 and M4 junctions at 8am. I do remember a bang on the side window a week or so earlier - perhaps it weakened the glass. There was nothing on my inside at the time just a grassy bank. Anyway, I only suffered a slight scratch to my right hand It's just so annoying the damage it caused. |

That's some story. Good thing nobody was hurt. But the glass scratches on the arm rest sound familiar. I also have those after the side window was shattered. That only proves what would happen if someone was sitting there. Nasty things, those bits of glass.

An airrifle was also the first thing that came to my mind. It's practically impossible for a stone to transfer it's energy so bluntly in a lenghtwise direction.

Sorry to hear of your experinece d241
Wonder if the window glass was from the same batch as that used for suspect fog lamps !!! On a more serious note, I always thought that nowadays, in their design, glass fragments from broken windows were supposed to inflict as little injury as possible to the occupants ? Ramsay |

Hi davidj214
I glad you're o.k. Sounds like a scary expeience to me. I've already had to replace my front windscreen because it was hit by a stone. |

Wow - sorry to hear about that...
I thought Honda put this splintex technology in their windows so they don't shatter! Tell Honda about it - say it just shattered and that it should have been safety glass! And remember that you were travelling at 70 and are still traumatised from the shock! |

I would agree about an Air rifle, they seem to like doing it regulalrly on busy motorways, I'd report it to the fuzz, just in case, never know, others may have had the same happen to them (lucky if it was an air rifle, my ones, even at a fair distance would seriously hurt you, if not possibly kill in the right spot). And someone else may not be so lucky, think what could happen if the glass went in your eyes or worse you got hit by the pellet.

Don't want to break the thread, but I don't think such a thing is done willingly, it would be quite hard to hit a 70 mph car in the back window with 12fpe air rifle, without being noticed.

My fathers window was hit on the motorway by a pellet, didn't shatter just a slight chip (but guaranteed I could hit a car window if I wanted, but I agree most people [read 'kids'/'Yobs'] don't have the skill, but if it is just indiscriminate firing, then it could just be a lucky shot.....Spray and Pray).

davidj241: just glad youre safe and well to tell the tale. What a nasty experience! Glad you kept focussed on driving on the motorway and wearing your gloves to remove the glass after. That "Bang" you heard a week previous, could that have been an air rifle? Id say its logical to assume whatever caused that "bang" DID weaken the windows causing them to smash suddenly.

Reading these threads did make me chuckle. Every time a window in a car shatters I hear "must have been kids with an air rifle". this is hardly ever the case. the bang you heard a few days ago was probably a stone hitting the window. The glass doesn't always shatter straight away when it is hit by something. An air rifle would probably have to be at almost point blank range to blow up a doorglass.
In answer to the "Splintex technology" unless the vehicle is fitted with "Double glazed" side windows ALL side and rear glass is Toughened glass, this is designed to shatter into tiny pieces unlike Plate glass that just breaks into large shards of glass and would be lethal. Front windscreens are now ALL laminated glass and therefore just chip or crack, I am afraid if you want laminated side windows you would probably have to defect to the dark side and buy an Executive Saloon.. |
