closing the boot

been menaing to pop this up for a while...

does anyone else have issues with the boot not closing properly?

half the time it only half closes - won't reopen, but not fully closed either (won't lock the car, DIS showing boot open)

it's almost as if it bounches then manages to grab hold at the last moment - if that makes any sense?

pressing the release catch and having another go, or pushing down on the boot lid usually makes it properly close, but it's a minor irritation I could do without

I've noticed this, only seems to happen on mine if you don't open the boot fully and then quickly shut it, as if the mechanism has a time delay on resetting. When it does it you can lift the boot up about 1 1/2" but it is "secure". I havehad it happen two or three times in a row.

Sounds like a 'safety' boot double closure thing to me. Most new cars have it, it's almost like you close it, and it latches, then push down again to get it to shut flush?

My Mundano has it. Annoys the hell out of me.

yep - that's it exactly! (phew - my description actually made sense - result!) - or should that be

I hadn't noticed it being only when I've grabbed something out of the boot quickly, but will watch out for that.

I have a lot of trouble closing my boot, sometimes. It doesn't matter how long the boot is open for, it just resists closing fully. It will often gut stuck half shut and need a forcible pull to resease it. If I open the boot too slowly, it will get jammed at the same 1/2 engaged position. I open it quickly and really slam it shut out of habbit now. I wonder how long it will be til something fails...

My tailgate need re fitting from new, as it was apparently fitted wonky, making the thing rattle like hell. I wonder if the alignment is off...

haven't had chance to check yet, but on previous cars there were 2 rubber 'bungs' on the tailgate which could be adjusted.

trouble is that whenevr the boots fails to close I haven't got time to look into it, and whenever I have the time to check, I forget to look...

ok - there are rubber bungs that can be screwed in and out

have screwed mine right in now, will see if it helps - they weren't quite right in to start with...

My tip is to keep your hand on it as you close it, rather than trying to slam it.

The rubber bungs thing is right. They are sort of threaded (technical term) and can be adjusted

I think that it also has a lot to do with the car being nearly airtight, as I have found the same problem, but with a door or window open, the problem disapears!!!

No. Always keep your hand on your rubber bung. It's a lesson in life.

I used to have to apply a lot of pressure to the number plate as the boot closed to make sure it shut properly. I have turned the rubber bungs in about 1/2 a turn each, and now it shuts just fine! Thanks, guys!

Isn't this forum great - a bit like "Houseparty" (anyone out there old enough to remember that?). So it's not just me having trouble getting the boot to shut first time. I tried just shutting from the centre with my hand remaining on the door a while back, but it hasn't particularly made any difference. Sometimes it shuts first time and sometimes it doesn't. I will try the rubber bungs thing and see if it works. I think Martin might also have a point with the airtight explanation, and I'll try that as well. Once I've sorted that out I can then attempt to get the bonnet to shut first time!

that's what I love about forums

I have a minor niggle, post up a question, and within hours not only does it transpire that lots of others have the same niggle, but we're also found a fix, or at least a reason

Yeah us!

(and obviously a big thanks to Pottsy and basegreen in there too )

You need to almost take the arm thingy out and drop it from that height, its rubbish. I hate dropping bonnets, always worried lights will fall out (I used to drive French remember), so I started off a couple of inches up, nothing, higher, nothing, higher, still nothing. Higher? Lifted bonnet, shut eyes and let go, closed, yeah! But a little worrying at the time.

I know this is an old thread, but mine is in for its 2nd service to day and I asked them (again) to look at the boot shutting. Mine needs an embarassingly hard slam for it to catch to the fully closed position. The demo car's shuts beatifully, so fingers crossed.......

Someone here mentioned slamming bonnets.

To shut the bonnet of my new 08 EX I have to almost jump on it. It takes up to 6 attempts and two hands have to be exactly on the bonnet crease lines. I suppose this means that when it is shut it is firmly shut. I have no problems opening it.

My boot shuts Ok. One can't have everything!
