No mate, the plate is bought and paid for. Keep it for 10 years if you wish.
Tis Yours.

Thats incorrect! If he buys a plate and fails to apply it to a car in his name with a year of issue he will have to pay the DVLA a retention fee of £25. If he still fails to apply it a further year down the line he has to do the same again! If he fails to do so then he loses the right to the plate and the DVLA put it back up for sale!

He has put up another topic on the same thing and as I've mentioned its the same thing when taking it back off the car!

Like I mentioned in the other post you've got up. The price of the plate from the DVLA includes the £80 assignment fee, so the only time you'll need to spend money on the plate is when you take it off the car to put it onto a new one or while you sell the other one.

Current fee for that is £105! £25 retention fee(for the year) as its off the car and £80 assignment fee.

Sorry Angie, I must disagree.
If you purchase a number, its yours, bought and paid for.( From a firm that sells them).
When you choose to place it on any car of your choosing, is up to you.

yeah thats what mine cost me, but I'm gonna keep it on retention for a while, as I've got a new car and I want to show it off.

Please feel free to disagree, but would you like to go and ask the DVLA for the £25 I had to pay to keep my number plate on retention when I first got it as I was too young to drive?

I have a certificate for a newly bought plate in front of me it states;

If you are unable to assign the mark by the date below, you may apply for a 12 month extention to your entitlement period. An extension application can only be made within 28 days prior to the expiry date shown. Please note that if you allow the right to expire, it cannot be renewed but if you have said the assignment fee you can apply for it to be refunded.

New plate certificate was issued 12 september 2007 and I have until 11 September 2008 to apply it to a car

Angie is right you never own the number plate and it can be withdrawn from you. You pay for the right to assign it to your car. If you sell the car with the plate on it, or fail to renew your retention rights every year you will lose it.
The DVLA have no obligation to remind you that your retention certificate is about to expire and if it does they can sell the rights to display that plate and there is nothing you can do about it. Trust me I have three private plates and know what I am talking about. Makes a nice change for me to know what I'm talking about too

If you have a plate I would strongly recommend that you look into these DVLA rules before it costs you dearly.

Makes no odds where you buy from, they are all issued by the DVLA and are subject to the same rules

Yeah same here Dimply. 5 private plates in this house hold and my mum always complains everytime about the fees charged by the DVLA when on retention!

I believe that if you have had a plate on retention since before 1 may 1993 then there rules do not apply, however if you buy from DVLA or Private company or seller or you take it off a car since 1 May 1993 then you are governed by these rules......so if you've got a plate and you've down nowt with it for over a year then the DVLA will be selling it, or maybe have done already.

You get a pound off doing it that way Angie

And yes, £25 per year if the plate is not 'on' a car - which I've been doing to retain my wife's plate since we sold her car 3 years ago

When you first buy the plate from the DVLA you 'retain' it for a year, after which the £25 per year kicks in.

If you've bought the plate from a private seller, then I'm not sure if you get the first year included - probably depends on where they got it from / how long they have had it?

Once it's on a car then you don't need to pay the £25 per year (until you take it back off the car again)
