strictly speaking, you kinda ought to fit the receiving unit to something even if it's only a 'I want to be safe as I walk up my drive so it turns this light on' light

Otherwise the coppers might mistakenly think that you were trying to use it for something else

Sorry to be so dense folks but what's this about the garage opener? I have a remote garage door opener fitted in the car (I have electronic doors, honest) but the none-too-subtle suggestions here make me think I could be putting them to additional use. Can anyone enlighten me please?

you could certainly use em for something else

you could turn on an outside light with em so that you can see your way to the front door

Mmmm . . . thanks TT but that wasn't quite what I meant by "enlighten"!
I'll take a leap into the dark and guess that the in-car remote control can somehow fool either a speed camera or a radar gun - or both? Is that right, or am I wide of the mark? If I'm right and as the gadgets are legal, why the big secret? And how does it work?

It scrambles their signal and send back an incoherent message, which therefore reads as ERR, unfortunately their use like this is a grey area (well black, illegal), but they can legally be used to open gates etc. Which is what I want it for.

That's great Tom, thanks. Now, just a purely academic question of course, do you have to keep the remote button pressed down when approaching a gun or camera, or is a signal continually pulsed out of these gadgets which causes the speed traps to return an error message? Not that I would try it of course, but it's best to know about these things, just in case I was ever inadvertently breaking the law.
Have you ever heard of anyone being nobbled for using their remote in this way?

They constantly "spew" a beam out towards whatever may be in the vicinity (they are a box mounted under the hood rrather than a key-fob affair). Yes several people have been nobbled for using them, but none of them ever had electric gates I believe . If you follow the link to CA Automotive in another thread on here, it'll give you a full run down of their 'uses'.

All the best,
Tom

Cheers for that Tom. Very interesting. Unfortunately my remote is one which clips on to the sunvisor so it likely won't be powerful enough to keep the dreaded rays at bay. Having said that, I haven't had a ticket for the past 10 years - fingers crossed, touch wood, grab that black cat.

Maybe I should just try to keep within the speed limit. It's not so easy to be a bad boy these days when the missus is in the car. Thanks to the high-visibility speedo she keeps saying things like, "You do realise you're doing 96 in a 20mph limit going past a primary school?" Only joking officer.

Glencairn.

Yeah, I just want it to give you a sporting chance (no one seems to play 100% fair anymore, it's just not cricket - Oooh public school coming through there......).
