Cloned Number Plate?

Someone is driving around london in a silver passat with the reg of my Black Civic.

Got a fine for driving down a one way street the wrong way, which they have photo graphic evidence (which i have seen).

Anyone any expereince of this and know what the best course of action is regarding police/insurance etc?

In the first instance I would photograph your car with the legitimate registration and send it to them pointing out that it is not your vehicle; with copies to the local police for the area concerned.

If they check the DVLA records they will see that your reg applies to a NHB Civic and not a Silver Passat.

...or just phone them and tell them to check it out.

You'd have thought they'd have checked this before sending the fine. How long does it take to check a registration number on the vehicle database.

This happened to my brother in law a few years back, there was another car driving round Edinburgh with the same reg, turns out it was the dvla's fault they had issued the number twice!!! All turned out ok in the end they issued the newer car a new number. Just shows its not always criminals.

Also a photocopy of your V5 showing your reg etc. Then a letter to the inspector in charge indicating you are refusing to pay on the grounds that...... and then file a seperate charge at your police station.

Happened to one of our trucks at work and ended up with loads of tickets, In the end had to go before a magistrate and swear on oath that it was not our vehicle.

Firstly HI

Have just joined your site (after ordering my new steed, Type R, only 10 days to go!).
Under the new Fraud Act that was ratified in April this year, it is now illegal to manufacture any instrument i.e. credit card, number plate etc in order to make a financial gain. The only query would be what financial gain is this idot going to gain? I expect you may be getting other visits especially when they possibly top up with fuel and drive off without paying for it!
It was good advice to photo your car and also let DVLA know, they will probably refer you to the Police, but the answer is to cover your back.

Yes, I think this will be the first of a few tickets you will get until this is sorted.

At least it is different car, so it shouldn't be too hard to sort out, hopefully.

Thats the financial gain, fee fuel, no NIP, No CG either etc.

Also if it is a cloned plate it is possible that it is going to be used in a robbery/burglarly etc. (as the going down a one way street may be a getaway route, I refer you to Crimewatch about 6 months ago where a gang used false plates, carjacked cars, and one way streets to make a very successful getaway).

Go to:

A) Police - Immediately, that way you cover your back sooner, rather than later.
B) DVLA - Another cover your a*se scenario

Quite right - idiots! Would take two minutes to check!

I would ignore it and let them drag me to court, waste their time and money and then counter claim for costs and compensation for stress

Yep, Thats just what i thought. Im affraid its just a right load of hassle as each council / ticket issuer deals only with their own tickets and it can involve a load of paperwork.

Five minutes I'll check if I've got a suitable letter for you in my pack.

These things are such a pain in the bum and time consuming!!

Slightly different but my brother was going to buy a Focus ST from a Ford garage a couple of years back, he decided against it and then a few months later received a speeding ticket for the car. It turned out that Ford had registered the car at DVLA in his name and an employee was using it!!

If you've been cloned you can apply to the DVLA for a new registration, will save you the hassle of it happening again...

Is cloning the main reason why ciVinfo members hide their number plate in photographs

If so, I'll have to get busy!

A letter to the Police and another to the DVLA is as far as I would go, the authorities should be able to deal with this in minutes. After all, it's their problem and not yours, same should be true for identity theft, but we allow the banks to blame us.

a similar story with stolen number plates, if you don't report it immediately next day you have a hearing @ the police - as a suspect (because the thief escapes with a full tank from the gas station - with your plate)
