Indeed, but I still did it on my Porsches, and most scarily of all, on my Z with its forged Rays (forged wheels are seriously expensive). But it's all just a belt and braces thing, and not needed in my opinion if you just shove it into gear. A car in reverse is not going to go far on its own.

Hi Topcat

I have never thought of putting the car in gear before buying this car. I always rely on the handbrake. In fact I don't think I have ever had a handbrake fail in 27 years of motoring.

[quote=Charley Farley;125259]Hi Topcat

I know people are divided about leaving the car in gear but again how many people actually do this? I dont know anyone that does it (this forum excluded) and in 24 years of owning a car I have never done it until now as it has never been an issue.

While I always leave a car in gear, I have never turned my wheels to the kerb. However if you look at the pictures, with the wheels turned, the wheels are kept away from the kerb by the tyres. The wheels can only catch the kerb if they are not turned.

i took my car for a test drive and when we returned to the dealers i parked in the space (which was a slight slope) appied the handbrake, and when i was getting out the car the handbrake just jumped off with a bang. i assumed this was me not applying it properly and thought nothing of it but now i know the truth!!!!!!

and the sales guy didnt even mention this when i asked if there was any known problems with the civic. maybe he just didnt know about this problem or maybe he was being sneaky!

will have to watch out for that cos the slope was very minor and i wouldnt even concider any other methods of keeping my car in 1 place than the handbreak! my driveway is steeper!!!!!!!!

Fair point if you have wheels with deep enough tyres. But take a look at a rage wheel close up you will see what I mean, there is so little rubber on them they would easily touch the kerb if turned towards it.

Why dont the dealers leave the cars on display in the showroom and on the forecourt in gear if this is the correct thing to do?

becuase there is 'correct' and there is 'what I've learnt to do in X years of drving, but got away with it so far'...

Just like an awful lot of drivers (myself included) drive around with one hand on the gearstick for a lot of the time - shouldn't do it, but it's a (bad) habbit I've got in to

Being a foreigner in UK, I noticed poeple don't put in gear when parked. Perhaps because it's not so hilly in England? I see it's more common practice in other part of the world.

But TT driving around with your hand on a gearstick will not cause a potential fatal accident will it? That does not answer the question, why if Honda say the correct way to park is to leave the car in gear with the wheels turned a certain way, is this not the practice followed within the dealerships?

Surely if this is part of the rules of driving why was I never told in my driving lessons to park the car in gear?

If the cars at the forecourt suddenly roll forward an kill someone does that mean Honda are not insured because they were parked incorrectly? I think not.

As you know I live in poland, where they generally don't use the handbrake , they simply put it into gear. I was a little shocked at first and even though I still use my handbrake, I now automatically put my car in to gear, as I have a security measure that means i have to do so. I am interested to see how I cope with the new civic and putting it into gear as it cannot have the bearlock security feature fitted.

Fair point having 'massive 55 profile' tyres I can get away with it.
Anyway the slope would have to be rediculusly steep to require turning in.
I'm not sure I would want to damage my tyres if the kerb was rough. Perhaps I am unusually sensitive today as I have had to buy 4 new tyres after only 21000 miles!!

Has Honda sent a ltr to all owners as my wife has not rec anything. I tend to put my Accord into gear when parking as owned a Vectra for a short time and rolling away was a known problem.

I have ALWAYS ever left all my cars in gear, whether parking on the flat, or on a hill. Having owned bangers and land rovers, it's become habit, and i'd still would not trust a brake on the rear wheels alone to hold a car on a hill.

The letter contradicts how i was taught by my driving instructor on how to apply a handbrake. He always made me depress the button when applying the handbrake.

What about Scotland - full of hills and yet people don't do it here either.
