Well ......... its goodbye from me....
Said goodbye to my Honda today, 2 years and 19000 miles on. Mixed feelings - there will be things I miss and things I wont.
Overall - I decided to change because of a number of reasons, which, taken together meant that I really wasn't enjoying the car when I should have been. Replacement is bigger, second hand, faster, diesel, and has a 'proper' automatic transmission. It also unfortunately both cost more and will use more fuel. I will post more details etc later. I will continue to look in here and perhaps make the occasional (always polite!) addition |

The Civic has been replaced with a (second hand) BMW 335d auto Touring.
As I think I have posted here before I have had an X5 BMW before and have been pleased with it. Its not a fair comparison with the Civic as the prices, target market etc are quite different. The 335d model brings back some of the effortless feel that I used to enjoy years ago when fuel was cheaper from Jaguar's lovely V12 engine, with still reasonable economy. So far it has done between 40 and 45 mpg - not bad for a high performance auto thats no lightweight. Anyway, time will tell whether in the long run this BMW lives up to expectations (as did both my Hondas before the recently departed Civic). |

Well almost 2 weeks now ... and a few comments;
The BMW has answered most of my requirements that I had missed on the Civic, though perhaps with some compromises. Ride - The ride is still pretty firm, though more resilient and less harsh in my view that the Civic. On the BMW much of the problem seems to be the use of runflat tyres. The Accord is significantly better than both. Overall, an improvement, but could do better! Road noise - Considerably better than the Civic particularly on coarser motorway surfaces at speed. Both cars have very low engine noise, though the Civic was perhaps slightly quieter at idle. Economy - I use to get 55+ mpg on a run, ~48 overall on the Civic. The BMW does about ~45 on a run, 35/36 overall in the limited time I have recorded. I shall miss the economy and those extra 10 miles to every gallon. Interior - The BMW interior is nice and very comfortable, but not spacious for the size of car. At a 5'9" I have loads of room, but its quite tight for big people. The boot area is probably smaller than the Civic! I do prefer the 'roller' type parcel shelf. The dash design is traditional against the Civics ultra modern, and I like both. BMW's radio is FAR better, and the SatNav screen better even than the Civics (good) one, but operation (by i-drive) is less intuitive. The voice part of the guidance on the BMW is less good. The air conditioning is overall better in the BMW as its less prone to blow hot and cold at whim. You can also trim the difference in temperature between upper and lower and the 'vigour' of the fan in auto mode. I hope the BMW will be faster to warm in the winter. Overall - one great point - the BMW has NOT A SINGLE rattle or squeak. Voice control actually works quite well - and the hands free phone is MUCH better in facilities (it downloads the phone book from the phone) and operation. Material quality seems good. Exterior - Paint (on my used example) is very good - only one small chip I can find. My Civic was also pretty good. I haven't had a chance to try the lights much, but they seem good. There IS a rear wiper. Rear parking sensors work about the same as the Civic, but have the addition of a rather fancy display on the satnav screen which shows which sensor is closest etc. Performance - The BMW can't really be compared with the Civic. It has twice the power (and almost twice the torque at even lower rpm) and a nice 6 speed REAL auto - Type R performance+ with at least as good economy and a REAL auto. Of course - in reality the whole comparison is unfair as they are different cars in different price ranges aimed at different markets. I enjoyed many aspects of my Civic, and now I'm enjoying the BMW. |

Do you find though everyone treats you like s*it???? They did in mine........ maybe it's just the jealousy of others not having a BMW (I loved mine)?
Glad your enjoying, your Bavarian piece of engineering Tom |

However it does not take kids to school (I don't have any - how did you think I afford the cars?) - but does regularly go off road (tracks etc. as its pretty useless when the going gets really tough) and I tow from time to time too. It only does a couple of thousand miles a year, but on those occasions its invaluable. |

I expect that you'll have many miles of trouble free motoring with the vehicle that you have chosen, I don't think that you can go wrong with a late BMW diesel. You certainly won't be seeing as many stone chips LOL.
Drive safe. |

I've often driven my dad 535 D. Very nice motor. The size of the car dont fit me so I dont realy enjoy the driving, but I feel the Honda motor could be as pleasant as the Bmw one with a little bit more power. But again it's good enough for me...
BMW work is better on the paint and inner finish, no doubt. Honda give me more pleasure (size of the car, design and handling) I'm waiting for the test of the new lancia Delat and of the future saab 9-1 before ordering my new car next year... I wish you teh best with you new ride... |
