There are occasions in life where opposing views are both right. This may well be one of them. Not all Civics are faulty. Not all Civics are fault free. The same applies to other marques. When an expensive, new car exhibits faults it's natural for the owner to be angry. When it doesn't, it's natural for the owner to express his/her delight. But neither has any right at all to demean or criticise the other's legitimate view of their own property. Expressions of anger or delight on this site made by members on the quality of their own purchases are perfectly natural and they should be warmly welcomed.

This is a very interesting set of views here on both sides..

We (People in general) do seem to go to either extreme with our cars - either it's either the greatest thing in the world, or the worst.

I've just joined as 'her ladyship' has just bought a Type S GT Diesel but since I'm not caught up with the excitement of it being my own car perhaps I can make a few comments - with any luck I can upset both sides!

The reasons why the car was chosen are well documented here - exterior & interior looks, pleasant drive, good fuel economy etc

But, having had a Honda Accord Type R many years ago cast-iron reliabilty was not one of them - quite frankly it was shocking. As far as I'm concerned at this point Honda make cars that are par for the course for quality and not the shining beacon of reliability they were many years ago - Having said that my wife was happy to balance this against what she wanted in the car.

This isn't to say we shouldn't expect (hope for?) good reliabiity but I just don't see Honda in that way anymore.

Havings said all that the Civic is a groovy looking thing with some character obviously aimed at a younger market - the cynical side of me would say that Honda failed to sell enough well made cars aimed at....ahem.....the more mature customer and said 'bugger this lets make it funky, reduce the quality and see what happens.' Some of the plastics inside, for example, are pathetic, granted I drive an Audi but come on Honda... And if you think Honda customer care is poor I'll do you a twenty page rant on bloomin' Audi dealers...

There are people here with major issues but the majority are without - it doesn't make it any more acceptable to those with the problems but 'dems are the facts'. We always publicise negatives in any area far more than the positives.

This website has proved hugely useful for us to see the real issues and also the benefits. Yes there are the usual ' My Civic is the best ever' posts and the laughables 'No, the Type R won't do 163 MPH for god sake' but overall it seems to be a good group of people enjoying their cars, telling us why and discussing pro's and cons - keep it up!

Anyway first post rant over and nice to meet you all!

That's a well thought out post Pauly (and I agree with pretty much all of it).

Oh, and welcome to Civinfo

Good post Pauly!

In response to some of the others, of course things go wrong and I accept that. What I can't accept is recurring faults. Anyway, enough now from me on this subject, done to death I think

I'm definately in the pro-Honda camp (for now at least) but acknowledge there were problems on early cars and clearly some of the Honda dealers are poor - although thats probably the case with all manufacturers.

What does irk me a bit is when people who have problems, seem to be very vocal in indicating that its a problem with the Civic range itself, and as a previous poster said - Civic drivers must be happy testing the car for Honda (paraphrased). Thats simply not the case and its cheeky to suggest it is.

Its unfortunate that early-adopters are experiencing problems but I don't necessarily think thats representative of the *vast majority* of owners, so its not fair to suggest it is.

Just my opinion.

Don't knock him Brodick. Geoff has already packed his bags twice and missed the ferry just to keep up with this thread!

And somebody, somewhere is already drinking your Sangria, Geoff!

I love my 2.2 diesel Civic. I've had it for three weeks and I still look forward to getting in and setting off for work BUT I do have reservations about the build quality. I've previously owned a CRV, previous model Civic and an Accord and I have to say this Civic doesn't feel as well built. I'm waiting for the dealer to sort out a nasty buzz coming from the left hand side of the dash at 1700 rpm and it's spoiling my enjoyment of what is otherwise an excellent car. If they fix it I'll be a much happier owner but like others in this thread I don't think Honda have done themselves any favours by producing a car that doesn't match up to previous build quality.

Hi All,

Got shot of mine at the end of August. After fault after fault I'd had enough and decided to go back to a little 4x4 (bought a 3 Door Suzuki Grand Vitara 1.9DDiS). Possibly not as refined as the Honda, and generally lacking in toys compared to the 55 plate 1.8EX I traded in, but I'm back to enjoying my daily drive again.

I miss the built-in Sat Nav and mobile hands free kit which came with the Honda, but that's about all. I've had a lot of questions from people who've asked why I got rid and I've had to tell them the saga of issues I had with it and they then understand why.

It's a real shame and I've lost a shed load of money in trading it in so soon, but c'est la vie.

I just hope Honda have taken on board comments from the owners and looked at the faults people are experiencing and put their house in order.

Cheers,
KJ

My god, what a passionate lot we are - for or against - and all very vocal!!

Well, to add my twopenneth worth, i respect other peoples views and was sorry to see that Geoff got rid of his civic. Like all places that sell things, (eg shops/ garages/ communications companies) you will always have one who falls over backwards to help and another who treats you like dirt when you complain and I think HUK could do better in this repect. However my dealer has always been helpful and I get on with them very well. I will be keeping my civic for a few years yet.

A member of staff at my dealer has also told me that a lot of the things owners have complained about and suggestions on this site will be fixed / incorporated in the revised model - like connection for ipods (the jazz and accord have it) but couldnt tell me when !

(PS - i have had the fuel filler cap replaced but everything else has checked out ok on the recall checks with no other problems.)
