According to Honda, we do have variable nozzle turbo's, and as I understand it, that's how the boost is controlled, and there is no wastegate. I havn't had a chance to have a look at the ones fitted, but I've seen other VNT turbo's. I'd definitely like to see how the economy is affected in normal day to day driving before I take the plunge with mine...

Normal day to day driving is completely unaffected. In fact, MPG has improved.

Also, quick note to all those not familiar with the finer points, Turbo's on diesels don't vent to atmosphere (Petrol Turbo's do), so they don't have wastegates.

So you can't add a dumpvalve to make the "ptish" noise that the knobhead down my street gets from his crappy Rover 600 when he changes gear. It sounds like a bus door opening.... Blah!

Before any clever clogs pulls me up, I already know about the Forge Motorsport dump valve http://www.forgemotorsport.com/conte...&product=FMDDV

Older diesel turbo's do have a wastegate, but don't have a dump valve. The VNT turbo's don't have a wastegate (or at least the ones I have looked at), as boost is controlled electronically by the VNT. I'm sure I have some nice pics of a VNT turbo cutaway somewhere, will see if I can dig them out.

Most petrol turbo cars only have a recirculating dump valve fitted from the factory. If you *really* want a dump valve, it's pretty simple to rig up with a solenoid and a throttle switch, although why anyone would want one is beyond me...

Glad to hear economy is unaffected, I'll be getting mine done at some point, just need to save the cash and probably wait till after christmas.

Damian,
I do believe the only bit I was wrong on was "we don't have variable vane turbos" - I stand corrected. Thank you 323GT-R

Everything else I believe is correct? - please re-read what I posted.

Sorry Miggins, I think I must have been drinking Stella that night and it brought out my argumenative side!

For the record, 1st full tank of diesel = 430 miles, same as pre-remap. This included a fair amount of "making best use" of the extra power. Just in case any of the boys in blue are reading, I'll say that the car accellerates up to 70mph very well. Quite what it does after that is anybody's guess! I imagine that 70 - 125 in sixth gear wouldn't take long at all.....

lol, I try to stay off the internet after I've had a few...

Damian, 430 miles to a tank, is that full tank and refuel when the warning comes on, or approx how many litres to fill? I've had a best of 530 miles on a tank, driving till the range said 0 and going very carefully, but usually I get more like 470 ish if I refuel when the warning comes on. Most of my driving is motorway stuff though, I'm sure it would drop a fair bit if I drove in town more. Just trying to get a comparative idea of MPG!

Boy, do you have a leaden foot. Much respect, as they seem to say these days. We get 56 mpg for an essentiallly urban (12 mile) commute and approaching 70 for careful multi-mile journeys. But then I maybe need to get outdoors more often...

How on earth do you get 56mpg? What am I doing wrong? All the road tests I've read on the Civic put the economy around 40mpg average, so my 45ish average doesn't seem to bad in comparison, what's the secret to 56?

I am an old git. And I am married to my wife who complains bitterly if I am profigate with fuel. It's a factor of experience over impatience. Absolutely no criticism implied (or event meant), but I have given up with racing everywhere, and now stick to the law, staying within the posted limit and having my fun trying to get the max from each gallon. Maybe i should get out more...

My journey to work comprises a bit of town driving, then the A14 (dual carriageway, but quite congensted), then the M6 for a couple of junctions and finally a bit more town driving. Approx 45 miles each way. A combination of sitting in traffic and then fast driving to make up time!

I have been known to put my foot down a bit though. The worst I've ever had from a tank is about 350 miles.

So, 430 miles is normal every day, not keeping too much of an eye on the economy gauge, driving.

The best I've had is about 550 miles, by driving like a lady for a week.

I tend to fill up within 25 miles of the warning light coming on. Usually end up putting 42-43 litres in.

Damian
p.s 6th gear now infinitely more suitable for overtaking!

Roll Up! Roll Up! Who Wants A Remap?!?

Chaps,

I've got 2 guys interested in a Celtic Tuning Remap. Anybody else interested? Don't forget, if we can get 6 people to make a booking, price is only £375 inc vat.

Also, they travel to each person's home/work to do the job.

Also is there anyone in Yorkshire thinking of getting it done? I live in Leeds and it might be good to have a few done at the same time.

Wink switchable remap

What would be great is if this mapping could be switched (say by using one of the less used buttons) so, when the car goes in for servicing, or if greater fuel economy is requried for a particular journey, then the original map could be used. Could Celtic or any other engine mapper provide this facility?

perchips provided such a module for Ford vehicles called Bluefin. You would load the software and take it off via the Bluefin module. You could also pick up fault codes and reset them.

Now sure if they have something similar tothe bluefin for the Hondas
