Hello Damian,
If you still want to do an acceleration test against a stop watch - I'm more than happy to provide the 'before' time as a comparison. Should convince a few doubters.

Hi Miggins,

You can do some timings if you like, however recent experience post remap tells me that the proof of the pudding is in the eating..... i.e as this weekend's poor Corrado VR6 & Audi A3 1.8t sorry ass driver's will contest.

It IS noticably quicker and PULLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLS harder and more progressively than most other similar sized vehicles.

1st and 2nd gears are too short to make it very quick off the mark though.

On a slightly different note, there's an ever increasing number of Civic owners who are having their cars remapped "behind the scenes" by Celtic Tuning. They're all having great fun, but want to stay out of the limelight, so that next time they pass you on the motorway & you can't catch up, you'll be wondering what the hell happenend!

At this point I think that I should give prior warning to any would be Type R buyers.... Why choose 2nd best?

Also, they travel to each person's home/work to do the job.

Nobody experiencing clutch slippage yet? (I can not imagine that with +35hp it does not wear on the clutch, have know several people blowing either intercooler or clutch with a chiptune)

No clutch slippage at all, nor any flywheel judder (which would be the more obvious symptom of a stressed clutch) remember, car transmissions are designed to be able to pull caravans and trailers. A remap isn't going to bother a healthy clutch.

I have NEVER heard of anybody suffering a blown intercooler because of a remap. You just couldn't build enough pressure with the turbo to punch a hole though sheet metal! A damaged intercooler may have been hit by a stone or some other foreign object.

My 12k service is due in about 3-4 weeks, would be interested in getting done after that......

Based in Wiltshire but i guess that would not bother them, just book together and arrange seperate dates ??

Bit of a trip....

Must admit, out of all the various tuning compaies mentioned, I am deadly keen on getting the Celtic Tuning remap done, unfortunately I am way up in North of Scotland (Elgin, between Inverness and Aberdeen).
Have got the cash ready, but after speaking with various tuning companies they are not willing to come up this far. Does anyone know how far up the UK Celtic Tuning will come, I am willing to travel down and meet them somewhere? Any advice or help would be much appreciated!

Why don't you give Tony a call and he will let you know the situation. They are pretty flexible.

E-Mail

At work at moment, kinda hard make a call over the phone in an open plan office. By the time I get home, too late. Have tried e-mailing them through their website enquiry thing, if you have a more direct email for Tony at Celtic Tuning that would be great! Apart from that, just have to wait and see what they come back with. If it means me going to them, I would probably be better off going to their Ireland office and even then, a day to get there then back again the next day.... still sounds like a worthwile roadtrip........to me anyway!

Smiler, I'm sure that you can make a call at lunchtime !

They are based in Bodmin, Cornwall (1,370 mile round trip for you).

They are very active and flexible and cover the whole of the UK, so I'm sure that they can accommodate you.

Remove ECU

Yeh, think I will call to see.

Another thought, is that one of the local "remappers" has told me that although he doesnt have a file for the new diesel civic, he can remove the ECU and sent it down to his partner to "bench flash" the ECU and sent it back, obviously it maens without a car for 4 -5 days but thats okay, just sounds a bit scary actually removing the ECU! Any thougths or comments?

I would anticipate that a 'bench flash' entails opening the box, removing the chip and reprogramming through a PC. Nothing to be worried about - just to be aware.

The sticky seals on the box are broken to do this but it's shouldn't be obvious if it's done properly. I had it done to my sEAT as they couldn't do it through the OBD port - no problems or issues.

I wouldn't be happy being either without my car for a week or trusting a valuable and critical component to a third party - but that's me!

Alternative Co
I communicated (!) sometime back with a guy called
Will Spooner of www.p-torque.co.uk They offer a similar service to Celtic but cost a fair bit less at £325. He was also willing to offer a forum discount. The only reason I didn't follow it through at the time was down to a lack of funds.

They re-map via the OBD port to give gains of +35bhp and +78NM of torque. This is £325 all in. (+35bhp meaning the minimum!)

Anyone know anything about this company, their testimonials are most encouraging? They are based in Wolverhampton. I will be chasing them shortly as funds are flowing again!!!

Smiler,

Personally I wouldn't go down the removing ECU route. I had my car done by Celtic about a month ago and I am very happy with the service that they provided and the results.

Travel

The P-Torque sounds ok. Wolverhampton is 455 miles and 8 hours from me, but still, better than Cornwall. Let me know if you are going to pursue them, maybe go there at same time. As I said previously, have got money ready today, just trying to find someone, the nearest person to me is a Superchips dealer in Glenrothes (3 hours away) but is wanting £511!!!

Superchips are good. Although they claim a lower peak power, the midrange always shows a hefty increase where you want your big lump of torque. Unfortunately a lot of these 'come out to you' remappers don't have sample power and torque plots to compare with the original output. It's very difficult to assess the difference on a gut feeling.

Those that have had their cars dyno'd after have all the increase at the top end and one very nice chap (on this forum ) found his didn't meet the claims and had it removed. (think that was a remap as opposed to a plug in)

I think that it was a tuning box that didn't meet expectations, not a remap. Also one guy who had a remap had it taken off because his fuel economy dropped. These sort of things do happen, but I've been very happy with my remap.

One thing I would say, I definitely wouldn't send an ECU away to be remapped. Once a car is remapped, it needs to be driven to ensure that there are no adverse side effects such as flywheel judder, or the car going into limp mode. If they're miles away, you'll be stuffed! It's always best to do the post-remap testdrive with the remapping engineer in the car at the time.

There's also a risk that you'll get a really lame map that is so conservative that you'll be really disappointed (in order to avoid any problems, whatsoever).

I think that you should go with somebody with some experience, either Celtic or Superchips.

Whatever you choose, good luck!

Damian

Hail the pioneers

I agree with Damian - you also don't want one billowing black smoke!

It's a shame as I'm sure there are some very good mapping companies out there but without experience and feedback of a successful application - nobody is keen to stump up the cash on a chance.

It is only because Damian had his done and has given good feedback that people are prepared to give it a go with Celtic.

How is your Uncle Celtic? ..........ONLY JOKING!!!!!!!
