Also, they're part of Filtration Control Ltd, who are a big manufacturer of air filters for industry, buses, trains etc... So they should know what they're doing. Also, they supply WRC & Formula 1, which is nice I suppose.

I'm taking the car to them on March 25th, they'll take some measurements of the filter and the airbox. From that, they need to have the toolings made, which takes 6 weeks. Then they can actually make a filter, which they'll try in my car.

I'll report back as to how things progress, like I've indicated before, I'm a bit of a nay-sayer to filter upgrades and am looking forward to having my mind changed!

Great news
Thank you Damian and javorb from all of us.
The end of the tunnel is in sight!!
Well done
Chris

Robbo, best take me off the buyers list..... I'm getting a freebie!

Also, I'll possibly be the first Civic owner to develop a faulty MAF.....

Ho hum! What can I say, I risk it all in the name of making the Civic a better car for us all. You may all shower me with:-

a) Praise
b) Beer
c) Naked ladies

Not necessarily in that order.

Sorry Robbo51, you misunderstand me....

I shouldn't be on the list because I'll be having the first filter that Pipercross make, tested and fitted to my car.

My remark regarding MAF's is a suggestion that, as the first user of a pipercross oiled filter, I'll be the first to experience any ill effect to my car (if it's gonna happen!)

The MAF is the Mass Air Flow sensor, basically it checks the amount of air entering the engine, and is located just after the air filter box. There have been reports that users of oiled panel filters have in the past suffered MAF failure, which causes your engine to turn decidedly sluggish. Oil from the filter migrates to the MAF, with the flow of air to the engine, where it accumulates on the surface of the sensor, causing erratic readings. VAG TDI engines with Bosch sensors were reknowned for this.

Time will tell..... But what the hell!

group buy

ok i have had word from pipercross today ,the filter will cost £35 including post ,they should be ready for despatch by the end of may at the latest but we need firm orders, they have asked if i can take all of the payments as group buys are despatched to 1 person to distribute.the only thing i am gaining from this is that i will get trade discount on any future filters i buy .i know people may have doubts but i can assure you all i will deal with everything in a competent manner.i am a powerseller on ebay and i currently have 753 100% feedback,i hope buyers will even consider my tuning units which benefit from the filters.i can only accept cash /cheque or postal orders,if anyone would prefer to pay by paypal i would need £1.50 extra to cover the paypal charges although paypal would give more securityto both parties,if all agree to this as soon as i get the money pipercross will push through the production quicker.anyone wanting to start paying please get in touch .

Just to add to Javorb's post, I went to see Pipercross on Thursday last week. The filter was taken out of the car, measurements taken and popped back in. It took about 20 minutes from start to finish.

Apparently, it's going to take about 6 weeks for the tooling to be completed and for the prototype to be fitted to my car. If all is ok, shipping dates of early May seem to be quite reasonable to me!

Where is the R&D? You may as well put a piece of foam in there for all the testing they are going to do. 20 minutes and a another 10 to see if it fits, If it fits????, thats encouraging when it's the only barrier between your engine and the all those particles floating aboout in the air.

For the tiny improvement (which they can't prove)and considering the possible damage to the MAF and God only knows what else, this doesn't make sense

I must admit to being a tad scheptical myself, but am willing to give it a go. FYI, the OEM filter is in a solid plastic frame, and is of the electrostatic multi-layer paper type. The replacement Pipercross filter will be made of multi-layer foam of differing density, so as to trap different size dust particles. It's also expected to give an extra 20% airflow to the engine which should result in a faster spool up time of the turbo, thus reducing engine lag whilst improving performance and economy.

The issue regarding potential damage to the MAF was raised by myself having had experience tuning VAG diesels. The bosch MAF fitted to the VAG engines was very susceptible to damage from oil contamination. However, I believe that this is not an issue for the majority of cars. FYI I replaced the bosch MAF that was fitted to my TDI with a pierberg MAF that was designed for a Mercedes car, with a few minor mods it fitted fine and worked straight away.

I suppose it doesn't make sense if all we do is sit around debating whether or not the panel filter will be of any benefit to our cars..... That's why I decided to crack on and do something about it. We'll know in about 6 weeks as to whether it's been worth the bother, and in about 6 months if it's knackered the car's MAF.

Watch this space -----> <------
