Lady Need Help With Accord Making A Funny Noise
I will try to give a much info as possible, I was driving my Accord today, suddenly the oil light came on (I have checked the oil and its good) the engine went into I guess limp mode (but not sure of this) it seemed to have no power, now when I start the car up I can hear what I can only describe as a plane landing sound coming from the left hand side, seems louder near the wheel. Now when I turn the engine off, for maybe 5 seconds the noise continues, whirling down. Now I don't think it's the turbo (not the same sound) I have done some research and I'm thinking maybe the timing belt, oil pump? Any help please.

Hi from a fellow 54 diesel Accord owner. Yes the TA website (as suggested above) would be a good place to also post this question (I'm also a member there) but actually you have the same engine as many Civics, so you're just as likely to get good advice here!
You have a timing chain (not belt) which hardly ever fails suddenly... usually gets to sound like a bag of spanners for a long time before any failure! Oil pump chain failure isn't unknown (and will obviously cause the oil pressure light to come on) but engine would make a terrible noise before seizing or knocking loudly shortly afterwards. Sorry to ask, but are you sure it's the oil pressure light, not the ECU error light? This would be a better outcome, so fingers crossed. And - if not oil pressure - then I'm thinking you maybe have a split hose between the turbo and intercooler? PS - Welcome to Civinfo |

If you mean engine management light (sorry if I sound silly) then no, saying that when I start the car the oil light is now off, quick question would this of read a fault anyway because I do have a car fault reader.

Might be a boost pipe has come off.
Check the back of the airbox and make sure the pipe is connected and not loose. Check the two air pipes at the intercooler to turbo and manifold are attached and not loose. No, low oil pressure wouldn't bring up the engine management light (strange that it's off now). But definitely try reading the OBD2 codes, even if it's off, as possible stored codes might be indicative of a problem. Now the lights off, has the noise stopped?

Car has no faults stored, oil light is still off, still making a funny noise, I'm leaning towards maybe the turbo, thinking it might have an oil blockage or the oil pump has packed up, is this possible? Is there anyway I could check this?

If the oil pump had packed up you would have no oil pressure and engine lights.
So you had an engine light come up but there is no fault stored ? You need some decent equipment as its not reading all the faults. There is a bug on some ecu regarding the oil sensor. An ecu update fixes this. That doesnt account for the noise though. Personally, you dont sound like you are a trained mechanic. You need an expert to look at your car and dont be tempted to drive it until they have. If you have rac or aa then use them. |

+1 (but I've never heard of an ECU oil level bug fix update for a 54 Accord)
...I hope you get it sorted without too much trouble and expense. Last edited by Jon_G; 22nd September 2012 at 19:07. |
