Servicing = paininthebum = how true is this ?

Hi Guys,

Got my car had its 100000 miles service done from ruislip honda. Its crv-53 reg - ex -automatic.

Had a major Level 4 servicing including free mot done. Had Mot no issues from mot.

But some advisories from HONDA -
Both front track end rods worn
front brake discs worn
front n/s track rod ball joint leaking
catalityc converter non-honda, modified heatshield
front shocks non-honda
Resr brake discs adn pads worn

Got the car back on the 13th. Started the car on saturday the 19th, car started but turned off straight way. Battery fine, car starts in 2 seconds then the rev counter drops and car stops.

First i thought problem with fuel. HAd lots of petrol.

SO, pumped the accelerator and help for few seconds. Engine stopped again after rev dropping to 2000-3000 and staying there with shaking engine for few seconds.

You can drive the car but as soon as you let go of the accelerator, it will stop/stall.

RAC came and looked at it and the engineer told me air is not mixing properly in the engine. he asked me if i had the MOT done. I said yes, he said they tried to tune the air intake and mucked it up. He asked me to try and drive the car to the dealer while he follows me. I started driving and it stopped at everytime i braked adn let go off the accelerator first 20 minutes. After that when engine was hot, the rev stayed at 8000 and car didnt stop anymore. I tried turning it off and on again.

Contacted the dealer, the guy who dealt with my servicing tried to convince me that it was a fault with the catalytic converter as its non-honda.

I dont understand how it passed the MOT then.

I have left the with them today afternoon.

I have never had engine problem in my last 2 years of having the car. No faults at all. Now after having major servicing done from HONDA itself , how can this had happened. Lots my faith on them. I am pretty sure if i had thaken the car to a MOTEST or somewhere like that , car would pass mot with no advisories.

Now, i need advise from experts here - could cat converter cause this ? if not, what is causing this issue and how can i debate with the dealers ?

Best regards,
Dj

RAC and AA do an independent check.. cost you but you can use this as evidence. Go back to the dealer / service place and give them a chance to fix it.. if not call consumer direct (Old trading standards)They will ask you to wrote to the company and give them a chance to rectify.. then they will step in. You can save a bit of time and give them in writing when you see them and give them 7 days to respond and repair or let consumer direct take it on. If the dealer is franchised also tell them you will be contacting Honda UK. You can also throw in a letter to the local paper re their service etc... that might make them think again. whatever The problem is there is no such thing as coincidence.. they work on it and this happens? Yeah Ok. Not. Would guess they have let an apprentice tinker with it.

Good luck

I agree, they have fiddled with something and caused this problem, it was fine before they touched it, as you say, and it doesn't matter a hoot whether the catalytic convertor is genuine Honda or not, they have jiggered something for you, and are responsible. Incidentally this dealership serviced our Civic for the 1st 3 years, with its first owner. This year, I did the service (using genuine Honda parts and decent oil), and I noticed several things, both the air filter and cabin (pollen) filter were absolutely filthy and full of leaves etc, and seemed like they had never been looked at before, let alone changed, and the oil drain plug washer was deformed and huge, suggesting it had never been changed at each oil change, like you are supposed to, just re- used each time,( a very bad practice in my opinion), and if this is representative of Honda dealer servicing, they damn well aren't going near our Civic ever again.

after story

Hi Guys, thanks for the advise.

i spoke to the guy today when he called and he was trying to tell me that there was nothing wrong with the car..but even though the technician had reset the ecu.. i asked him - r u sure ? casue i had this same rpoblem 3 days in a row and when i dropped it off to them and the technicia started the car in the morning - cold start - no problems at all..he was trying to prove himslef when i stopeed him adn got angry...i told him my time is precious..i am not here to waste anyone's time..getting my car to them and back is actually disturbing my work and daily life...

i also told them nothing of these would have happned if i had taken the car for a mot only without servicing to alocal mot station..and i ahve never had trouble with my car before ...i took the car to you as you were supposed to be best.....i have done soem research on the internet about catalytic converter and it has nothing to do with engine except emission...this device blocks carbon emission from car...so, donr try to give me that excuse..

then he calm down and said - sorry sir..but we have had no problem so far with the car..but will check again...please drive the car for couple of days and if you think there is stil rpoblem with the car, you can speak to my manager adn he will take it further...

then i said ok...i will collect the car and drive it ....

i agree with you guys - they must have given a trainee to do my job..i am gonna open up my car after i get it - airbox, oil etc..if i find something funny..i will take photos adn sedn it off to trading standard, watchdog, honda main uk and local newspaper...they dont know who they are dealling with ...i will make them suffer ..its a matter of principal now rather than revenge....

they are becoming like quickfit now...

Thanks guys for your support..

Ruislip......

When I collected my Civic last September from Ruislip:

  • Front windows didn't work (fixed via the reset procedure posted here)
  • Rear number plate seriously wonky (DIY fix)
  • Carpet mats not properly anchored (just hooked into carpet cuts)
  • Red battery terminal cover hanging loose
  • Tyre pressures ranged from 26 to 36 (I thought the car was driving funny)
I understand that Ruislip PDI's are performed at their Southall branch but that shouldn't matter.

Funnily enough I had my first service performed yesterday by Newton Honda Croydon and as usual superb service

The only redeeming part about Ruislip is that they gave the best price to p/x my old 07 Civic for the 59 one.

my ordeal

Hi guys,

thanks for following this thread..

Went to collect my car today in the afternoon after few confirmation that my car had no problem starting at all even from cold ( and i was just lying and wasting their time cause my time is not precious ). Paid for whtatever track rod adn ball joints needed changing ( as if the car would fall apart if i didnt change them immidietly ), started the car and the rev was at 0 and engine was shaking like it will stall but didnt stall. i opened the bonnet and cheked the temp, it was cold..

i called the service guy immidietly and showed him what was going on and this is exactly why i had to bring the car back..he said let me bring the technician who worked on your car ..when technician came ..he turned the car off adn on again and said he hasnt seen this before and for him the car started fine no issues..and he turned the car off again adn on and ...WALLA...it turned off and the second time and the third...

i told this is exactly why the car brought back and this had only started happening after the servicing...

he treid to explain but couldnt..then he said he will clean the throttle pipe first and see how it goes...

i went inside again...and service guy told me i have to leave my car again..i said - what am i gonna drive..? he looked at his computer and said no car is avaialbe at the moment..my friend was with me, he went angry and said - you guys could not repair the car after 5 days and now we have to leave the car again...you have to sort out a car now...

then we spoke to the manager and they gave me a 58 jazz to drive...

tomorrow they are supposed to look at the car again tomorrow and let me know if they have fixed it or not...

what a hassle....!! all i want is a stamp on my service book from honda.....too much to ask i guess...never again...i will buy the parts get the servicing done from my friends or someone i can trust in the future....cheaper and hassle free...

I would want some form of "gesture" from them for the inconvenience..... AND I would be looking for the car to be sorted properly!!

end story..

Hi guys,

Got my car back today. They dropped my car off and collected theirs.

Problem has been solved as i ahve been told bby honda. I came back from work adn started the car..it started ok and the rev seemed to be going to 2000 and dropping to 800.. it was warm though. Will try it tomorrow morning from cold again. They said the throttle body has been cleaned and that has resolved the issue. Tomorrow starting from cold will be the untimate test.

Will keep you posted.

Thanks,
DJ
