Yeah, yeah, I know it's pricey, but I'm thinking that the little scroll wheel, and its blue screened LCD display will complement the interior of our cars really well....... |

Allegedly it blew the head unit, but I was talking to the sales man and not the mechanic, so that might mean anything. He said that Honda only officially support a link to the Jazz, regardless of the fact that my ice>link worked on the Accord. So sorry folks, I did try and luckily on a car that is not officially mine yet! Back to the drawing board. |

Scott, sorry it was addressed to you.
It would be really useful to know what the garage are fitting so that we can all rush out to do the same. My fall back position, apart from an iTrip, is to go the FM modulator route, but am holding off in the hope of finding a CD changer solution. |

Why not connect an I-Trip to the I-Pod. This anables you to play the I-Pod wirelessly through the radio. You could get a widish 'phone cradle and put the I-Pod in that, and connect it to the cigar lighter for a constant charge.

Fm transmitters aren't particularly good, I have one and it's okay, but not ideal.
particularly tricky if you travel around the country as well |

I have previously used and iTrip. I found around Manchester and the North that 87.9 was a good frequency, but last year when I was in France, going via Dover, this frequency was really crowded.
It also doesn't help that the Civic (and Accord) ariel is in the rear screen and does not appear to be as sensitive as the bee sting ariel with my previous Accord. Hard wired to the cd changer is by far the best, but given my garages experiences, outlined above, I am a bit dubious at the moment. Kensington also do a FM transmitter which has had very good reviews http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/ipo...for-ipod-ipod/ which I might try if my iTrip is not that good in the Civic. |

Hi Guy's
I've been down the iTrip / FM transmitter route and it's really not worth the bother. If you think it sounds good then burn the same album to MP3 disk and listen to the difference. You'll never look at an iTrip again! Hardwired would be brilliant but as yet there are no known solutions. I've had the back of the radio out and until Dension or Autoleads make an adaptor there ain't nothing (apart from Pottsy's work-around) that will fit it. I am waiting to see what happens with Scott's but to be honest if it works properly and isn't an FM job, then I'll start cooking my hat right away! At the moment I'm burning 150 tracks at a time to MP3 cd's and they work great, with full song info display too! I suppose it could be worse. cheers Roger |

Just out of interest what bit rate are you using for your MP3? I use 192 when ripping to AAC for the iPod, but have only got 128 MP3 at the moment. I would contemplate re ripping 400+CDs to a higher bit rate MP3, but only if the gain in quality is worth it. I suppose that in the end I will just have to try both rates and see what I like when the Civic arrives. Thanks Simon |

192AAC is probably about 40-50% better sounding than 128k MP3 on a decent setup.
Remember though, it all depends on your hearing and musical choice. |

Hi Honda 100
All my MP3's are 192. My AAC's are 128 though. I am only re-rippng my favorite albums so I can listen in the car, otherwise I just convert in itunes, which is criminal I know but at the end of the day, I am using them in a car, that's driving on a noisy road, with the fan blowing, and it's a deisel - and I'm 43 so my hearing's not what it used to be. The thing is, I used to be very purist. I only had vinyl, on a Linn Sondek with Karma cartridge etc. etc. Then I went with CD's because there wasn't much choice, so that was a step backwards. As I sit here writing this I'm on a quad Mac G5 running Logic Pro and Reason music production software through Studio monitors, so I do know what sounds good and what doesn't and to be honest, the very best thing I ever heard was a super audio CD demo in a supermarket in France! So now, If I burn something at 128 or 192 or whatever, so long as I can crank it up in the car and think 'Cool' then I'm happy. Most of the time I'm singing along at the top of my voice anyway, and believe me that doesn't do anything for the acoustics! It also depends a lot on the production quality of the album. When I listen to the likes of Pink Floyd/Barenaked Ladies/Divine comedy etc. then it sounds bloody amazing at pretty much any of the higher bitrates, but if I get a bit silly and put, say, Scooter on, or anything mainstream pop, then the production is so crap it's never going to be great. I just crank it up and sing louder! The best thing I did in the Civic was change the front speakers and put the Alpine Sub in (see other posts). Now my favorite artists sound really great but everything is acceptable. Rock on! Roger |

I can sympathise totally with the change from Vinyl to CD to MP3! We seem to have gone from worrying about wow and flutter to how many downloads we can get on one CD rom. Something to do with being too busy just to sit and listen. One of these days my CD collection might just make it up to the loft, but I still like them around me even though I tend to listen through iTunes and my computer surround sound. However I agree with you about the car environment being the great leveller when it comes to what bit rate you listen at. When you take into account the wind, road and general car noise it is the volume that matters to a great extent. Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Yes etc sound great when they are played nice and loud on a long journey. As you can see I am a child of the 60s! |
