Display true speed (EX only)

I've found a way to display your true, exact speed, so you can see how much your speedo is over-reading at different speeds.

1. Start the car.
2. Go into the diagnostic menu.
3. Go into GPS Information.
4. Press the MENU button for about 5 seconds.

A new screen showing detailed GPS info will be displayed. At the top is the true GPS speed, shown to an accuracy of 0.1 mph.

On my car, at 70mph on the main speedo (held with the cruise control) the GPS speed is 65.7 mph.

its crazy isnt it....

just means you are putting more miles on your car all the time!!

and what about the police patrol cars, dont they have their speedos checked/calibrated so its spot on?

i bet honda say the car does (for example) 0-60mph in 10s but is that speedo 60mph or correct GPS 60 hmmmmmmm...................

plus your reading of 65.7mph at a displayed 70mph means that over a year, if you do 13,000 miles you will only have really done 12194 miles, which is 806 extra miles (and depreciation) for nothing.

only way to fix this is to get it calibrated again, or put bigger tyres on your car!

GPS is very accurate with 3 triangulation satelites, but the normal (and better) way to get exact position and speed reading is by using 4.

Can the computer tell you how many satelites its locked on to? The aircraft at work i think use at least 4 satelites to navigate. Think the A380 is one of the first aircraft to have the ability to do a full auto GPS landing --- its that accurate!

Brilliant!

Next thing is a Poll to get average readings. Is your work never done?

Not necessarily... The speedo may over-read, but the odometer will be as accurate as possible. Performance figures are calculated by using a separate speed measuring device, so no problem there, and the GPS system typically uses about 8 satellites at one time, so the speed readout will be good.

I'm sure you know this already Potsy, but if you hold down the menu key whilst at the diag screen (First one), you get a developers menu with even more options! You can even tweek the map colours!

Speedo's are generally made to overead by the manufacturer. This is because they need to make sure that it doesnt under read as the manufacturer would be in trouble if it did.

Bog,
Many thanks for this tip. I was never too happy with the night-time Map display, it is now customised to my liking.

Bog, likewise. I didn't know this, and as soon as Jayne returns the car I too will customise the night time display (which drives me mad).

Not having an EX you might call this sour grapes , but I think I'm right in saying this figure is a horizontal speed, so only accurate if you're travelling on a totally level road: any gradient will render it inaccurate as a measure of ground speed.

Think I spoke too soon, the customised colours do not appear to be saved, they revert to original following switch off. Looks like the Save function is disabled.

Indeed you are correct, but it is such a small amount I don't think people will worry about it.

For a 1:50 gradient, the error at 70 mph is 0.01 mph.
For a 1:20 gradient, the error at 70 mph is 0.09 mph.

The maximum allowable gradient on a UK motorway is 1:25, most "hills" are nearer 1:40.

Thats a shame you can't seen to save the settings! I've not had a proper play yet as I only discovered the menu by mistake on my way to work this morning. I did notice one option for 'Fan Control' which is set to off by default. I wonder if anyone could shed some light on what this does?

Hey bog you can change the colours and more with out having to go into diagnostic menus etc. On the jog dial go into menu and slide the top part of the wheel across to the right, either once or twice (can't remember) and it will let u change colours etc.

p.s welcome!

Cheers czechplastik,

I know the normal way of changing the colours, but the hidden menu allows you to customise the individual map colours (i.e the roads, woodland etc.).

The thing thats been bugging me is why the developers menu is still accessable in the production version, surley this would only be of any real use on prototypes and R&D versions. Not even dealers would need that level of control!

Pottsy,

How on earth do you find these things? Have you been reading things the rest of us can't get?
