[HOW TO] Wire in a sat nav device

Bought a new tom tom and wanted to wire it up (like the earlier snooper post)
I got the cig lighter connection and I thought I could cut the end off and use the bare wires to connect it into the fuse box. but..........
The cig connector cable says "Input 12v and Output 5v"- does this mean my idea cannot be done as by putting it into a 12v supply in the fuse box may damage the tom tom unit????
please help

EDITED: Amended title.

Good thinking for being cautious! If you had snipped the wires, that would have been the end of the tomtom...

Go to Halfords (or any car bits place) and buy a female in-line cig lighter socket. It's just a stand alone cig lighter socket with 2 wires coming out of the back. Wire the 2 wires in to the fusebox (like the snooper), and then plug the tomtom cig plug into your hidden cig socket. Stuff the whole lot away up and under the dash - and you're done.

if u disassemble the plug on your tomtom cable there will be a small PCB (Circuit Board). u can simply put this circuit board into a new housing and then hard wire from an ignition feed like the snooper post

just bought a cig lighter socket to wire in my road angel but noticed that it only has one cable from it with a spade fitting on end. Presume i remove this and wire into fuse box - but how is it earthed? Should i get another sort with two wires?
