Replace the fascia with the Type R glare and scratch free one

Skills required: clipping and unclipping, screwing and unscrewing.
Special tools: none.
Parts: Type R fascia, Maplin RG00A grommet (only if you have HIDs).
Time: 30-40 mins.

Parts prices are here.

Firstly fit the grommet if you have HID lights. It goes in quite nicely once you've soaked it in boiling water for a few minutes. I have 7 left if anyone needs one (PM me for my address and send me an SAE).

Adjust the steering wheel fully back and down.

Unclip the lower dash by pulling it backwards. Remove the wire and hose (just falls off). Note that all wires are removed by pressing a release clip on the male part (the bit connected to the wires).

Remove the lower dash part.

Remove the 2 silver screws just below the instruments and unclip the fascia by pulling it forward.

fasc04.jpg

Optionally remove the lower dash panel to help get to the wires. To do this, unclip the triangle on the edge of the dash to get to the one silver screw, and then unclip the lower dash.

Note that in this photo I've left the lower dash on - don't bother trying, I had to remove it!

Now you can see the wires for the start button. Remove these, then you can pull the fascia forward and get to the VSA wires, then finally the single plug on the left hand side.

What you'll see on the left:

And on the right (blue is VSA, white is start button):

Now lift out the fascia, and transfer the gubbins on the back from old to new. All the bits are held on with large silver screws.

Note that some switches like to be seated before tightening. See the slots on the switch screw holes:

Check the anti rattle velvet. Mine needed moving a bit:

When you put everything back, don't forget to attach the white pipe onto the lower dash. Also remember the 2 silver screws that hold the fascia on before you clip on the lower dash.

Admire the finished result:

I quite like the new style dash! The only thing that I'd say is shame about the grommit, but I won't need one of them.
Shame you didn't have it done for the meet and I could have taken a peek!
Can you confirm that the material is identical (or as near as) to the little rounded triangle above the dash?

The material is a bit different to the triangle - more carbon-fibery than that. The grommet doesn't look so bad for real, I might just buy the switch and use it to control something else (snooper maybe?)

This job is dead easy - anyone could do it.

Nice work Pottsy !
Pitty on the gommet! I would have mounted a button.
Example to switch on/off the courtesy lights.

That will teach me to listen to my dealer.
I was in there today picking up my Type R rear lamps, and was told that the fascia doesn't fit.
But then again, they did tell me that the rear lights didn't fit. Hey-ho, they are meant to be the experts.
Another trip tomorrow to order the fascia. Don't suppose you have the part number??

Time: 30-40 mins.......

Time: 30-40 mins.......

Does this include me losing all the bits, breaking several nails, getting frustrated half way through and ending up with the dash board on the drive for the next 3 months.....?

Would love to be able to do something like this but my talents must lie elswhere....I hope!

Good luck to you all - soooo very jealous that I am so incapable of this.

Great post though!

Pottsy,
These instuctions will be most helpful when I come to fix some rattles in this area.
Please can you clarify some confusion I have. The original shiny black plastic appears to be a seperate skin mounted on the larger facia part you have removed. Is this not so, if it is then can it be removed seperately ?
Thankyou.

It is a skin, but it's glued on and cannot be replaced.

I am having mine replaced with the original one, I went to look at the Type R dash and decided it made the centre clear bit look a lot smaller. Although the Type R one is far more practical.

Honda only charge £40 to replace it though (im not paying for it - my insurance company are) but dont think would have imagined it myself lol

I like it, but even though it is easy to you, I would be scared about damaging something or getting something wrong, or it won't go back properly.

Kremmen, that's what the dealers are there for, to patch up or sort out us DIYer's.

Pottsy, a big thank you for this 'How To', part is now on order.
