I've changed plenty of bulbs over my time, but found the Civic ones a little fiddly to get housed correctly. If you find light flairing out all over the place check that the bulbs are sat correctly. The smallest mis-alignment means light all over the place.
I found the best way of making sure was to look through the lens glass (lights off of course )at the bulbs and see they are right.

This can also be due to the painted tip getting scratched off when installing dip bulbs - I had this recently and was constantly getting flashed. All due to poor quality masking paint.

Replaced my bulbs today. Changed the dipped, main and position bulbs for Philips Vision Plus (position bulbs are the ultra bright ones from Autobulbs).

Crikey what a job! Several layers of skin on my hands have been shed in pursuit of the new look at night and after over an hour of fiddling finally had them all in place.

Lets hope I never need to change them again!

Thanks for the write up, instructions were an absolute god send!

After reading jw's how-to, thought I should get round to upgrading the headlight bulbs.

Went for the Philips Vision Plus +50% bulbs from Autobulbsdirect.

jw's write up was spot on for the main beam bulbs, but the 1.8 Petrol has much more clearance around the right hand dipped beam unit than the 2.2 Diesel. I am assuming all the 1.8s are the same as this under the bonnet ?

As you can see from the enclosed photo, there is loads of space around the back of the headlamp - no expansion tank or hoses in the way

First pic shows the plastic cover in situ, second pic shows the back of the headlamp when the cover is removed.

Now just need to wait for darkness to fall so I can try them out!

ps Apologies for the poor quality images, only had my phone to hand.

It isnt't difficult espescially on the petrol engined Civics, the 2.2's have little bit more gear in the way but from other post's still not too difficult.

Go for it

Hi Guys/Gals,

After reading a bit on the civic lights, I've decided to change them as they are pretty bad when driving on dark roads without street lights...

I am just a little bit confused (please bare with me as I'm new to this light thing ) Firstly you get the park lights (first click), then the normal driving lights (second click), then you get the bright lights...What bulb should I replace where, I'm reading for dipped beam this and high beam that, but don't have a clue which is which!!! Sorry for the silly question...

First click = positioning lights. Those little 'weedy' things that don't so much light the road as allow others to see you when getting a little dark in the evening. These are 501 side lights.

Second click = Dipped beam. On most civics this is the H7 bulbs but on some it is a HID lamp. You use these to drive around town when you need 'full' lights to see, but don't want to dazzle people.

Push the stick forward and that is full beam (sort of thing you would use on country roads when you won't dazzle oncoming traffic). These are H1 bulbs

Hope that helps,

Matt

***** that help me lots! At least now when I go looking for bulbs I'll be able to get the right ones and know what I'm talking about...The 501 bulbs, are they the same as the interior lights??? I think replacing the dipped beam is most important, the full beam is bright enough already...

Is there a trick to taking the little metal clips off the hoses and putting them back on? Should I do it by hand or with some pliers?

Also, the black cable coming from the battery to the body of the car seems really in the way. Did you detach this or leave it in and work around it?

Hang around my home town, there are some Civic guys with fancy headlight so called "Projector" with Angel Eyes (parking light). These look quite sexy IMHO

Will try to post some pix soon.

What does your manual say?
It should be covered there.

The manual just says "remove this pipe", but doesnt explain how! Just wondering if anyone has done it and how they did it?

Thanks

Light upgrade

Arun.
Me too!
Finally had enough with existing poor lights on return from Bournemouth.
Bought set of Osrams, went to do it today and a nightmare!
Might try again tomorrow.

I've just upgraded my H1's and H7's. It was easy til you get the the one under the coolant tank, that was the hardest thing ive done in a LONG time. i hav e quite big hands and it literally took 20 mins to get the cap off, and another 20 to get the connector off!!

Also Osram nightbreakers really arent that white
